Connecting two record changers

by wingnut049 » Tue Feb 09, 2016 12:20 am

If I want to connect two record changers (Garrard Type A) to a tuner/amplifier, where do I connect the second changer? BTW they both have magnetic cartridges.

Why ??
If you want them connected at the same time--you may or may not be able to get away with a "splinter"--if not, you will need to build/buy a mixer--as the amp probably only has one Mag input-- ?? Ron Rich

Ron, for proper operation & sound, only one unit can be connected at a time.
A quality A-B "switching" box could be used.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Hi Matt,
That was my reasoning for my "WHY?? at the start--
I do not think one could run two, thru an amp, and understand what was being reproduced--Hell, I can't even tell what my wife is saying if the TV is on---- Ron

Magnetic pickups are coils.
Coils are inductive elements.
The tiny signals, along with the fairly critical "loading" needed for proper response cannot be messed with.
By connecting another "coil" AKA cartridge, it disturbs the loading and kills off frequency response along with signal voltage.

I have an Onkyo TX-5000 that has 2 phono inputs. I used one changer for 78's and the other for 45's and 78's. It's quit working (no sound) and I can't find anyone in the area that works on vintage equipment.

OK--in that case, an external AB switch set-up should do it--same as what I assume you have internally in your old amp--

Or get one of those little DJ mixers with inputs for two turntables. Hook it to an aux input on an amp. I found a used one for $25.
