Basic Packard Bell Console / Newbie Questions

by bajaddict » Sat Aug 04, 2012 11:40 pm

I wanted to ask if someone could please provide help with some really basic questions..... my story and questions have probably been asked here, in one variation or another, a 100 times.... so I apologize in advance and ask for the expert's indulgence of yet another Newbie's questions.

I found this message board while researching the Packard Bell stereo console that you see pictured. My wife and I picked her up for 20 bucks at our local Goodwill some months back & she has sat idle ever since. She powers up & the turntable rotates, but sound no workie. There was a new stylus included in the purchase & replaced the broken one and got my Wife's "Get Your Wings" a' spinnin'..... all to no avail of course :D

After reviewing similar first-timer's posts, I shut her down and unplugged her

So the basic info that I am looking for is the Model No. and Year, if that is possible to ID from my photos. I would look into her further, given that information, and decide whether I want to "do it right"... or pass her along to someone that will.

My thing is the collection and repair of old clocks.... I have about 70 in running and non-running order, so I gotta estimate the "order of magnitude" that a proper job would entail.

Thank you & any advice is appreciated :D

Judging from the changer's styling, it's a Garrard 3000 series with a Pickering magnetic cartridge - popular in the early-mid-60's.
The model number is usually located on a sticker or stamp on the rear of consoles.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Check your speaker switch. Yours appears to be on EXT (external speakers), you need it to be on INT (internal speakers) to get sound out of it unless you have external speakers connected. Try this first. Both setting has both internal and external speakers playing.
