Wurlitzer 2800 stopped working!

by Macasterj » Wed Mar 14, 2012 6:11 pm

I was selecting some songs the other day and all of a sudden the selectors got stuck and the jukebox made the latching noise and then just stopped. I sprayed some contact cleaner on the selectors and when I powered the machine up I noticed a little smoke coming from the areas of the latch solenoid. I pulled the plug on the machine. I imagine the smoke is from cleaner residue, should I let it burn off? I have the manual but nothing in the troubleshooting guide sounds similar to my issue. Any ideas on what my next move should be with it? Does anyone know of any repairmen in the San Diego, ca area.

Thanks!

I hate to write this--but, you may have done more damage to that keyboard by "spraying" it with "contact cleaner". If you used a non-residue, type cleaner, you are probably OK--but using any spray on that type on slide switch can just wash the "dirt" down into it ! Using a "cleaner" with anything in it ("lubrication") can cause it to "conduct" in areas you do not want it to. The open blade "leaf" type switches, are even more susceptible to problems, if they have anything left on them.
The problem you are having can be caused either by a dirty contact in the keyboard, relays, or the "start" or "reverse" (Micro) switches in the ES.
If your spray contained anything, you will probably need to remove the keyboard from the phono, remove the latch bar coil, ( and meter, if attached), and wash it in hot sudsy ammonia. Rinse in HOT water, dry it totally, and burnish the leaf type contacts, with a burnishing tool. Then re-lube all "pivot points" with a drop of 20 wt. ND oil.
Or you can try Mike Zuccaro at:858 271-8294--I know he can fix it--but don't know if he makes home calls-- If you call him, please say "Hi" for me--it's been a couple of years since we last spoke-- Ron Rich

It was a dumb move! I have decided to leave it be and seek help to fix it right. I didn't use much cleaner but I will take it in for an over haul next month. Thanks for the info!

Be sure, if you are going to "take it" somewhere, that the mech is "bolted down", and the tone arm tied down--as well as checking that all components are fastened securely--- Ron Rich
