I have a Seeburg Celestia 100-78D (Red Box) that I started tinkering with. There was a record in the mech and kept playing over and over, when a record is playing there is a noise that sounds lika a dry bearing that goes away once the record is ejected and the sound would come and go until you gave the box a Fonzie to bring the sound back. I pulled the mech and cleaned it up and lubricated according to the chart. I took the amp out cleaned and used Deoxit on the connections.

The sound now works fine. The mech still has the noise only when a record is playing that I am trying to eliminate. When selecing records, the A side selected seems to always play correctly. As to the B side, it rarely will play when selected. However, on occasion the phono has a mind of its own and will decide to play a previousely selected B side song or several B sides for no obvious reason? I have cleaned and used Deoxit on the RCA plug as well as tightened it. The B side issue is still present?

Ron's Microlog Troubleshooting Guide I beleive applies mainly tp black & gray boxes, so not sure if it applies to red box units? Two of the symptoms in this book seem to describe my problem: "Scans past all selections on ONE (B) side -- OK on other side (A)." and "Occasionally(In my case most of the time) scans past a selected record but but WILL PLAY IT LATER WITHOUT RE-SELECTING ( In my case sometimes)"(Does scan twice). In both cases the trouble area is the "Mechanism" Correction is "Bent/disconnected/burned contact under Tormat unit* or, on LS-3, reversing switch contacts *all models after LS-3 have the "new type", "read out contact block" - see service manual for correct adjustments. Also detent switch".

Used Page 24 of Ron's book to try to pinpoint problem, selected "A sides" 00, 02, 04 and 06, letting each one play to conclsion and mechanism scam to stop before selecting next record. After 06 had concluded playing and without further selections being made, it scanned to 79 played that record and then 73 (both B sides) and played that record and then scanned to a stop. Both 73 ande 79 had been keyed in a few hours ago and were not picked up at that time.

Open to any explanataion of where to go from here to resolve the selection issue?

Rather then copy, word for word, from the trouble shooting guide, read it---especially the first few pages showing the "Overview"
BTW--the "Red Box" phono's are NOT "MicroLog" models ( all of these models are shown on the cover), thus the "MicroLog Trouble Shooting Guide" does not apply--except it can be used to trouble shoot this problem, as both versions use a very similar "read out circuit"--see "Procedure #3.

In the battery test the mech detented at every space.

I am now moving onto procedure #4 in the Guide for the black/grey boxes. Will this procedure work with my red box? If so, what two key sequences should be substituted for the three digits listed in the guide?

I also believe instead of DDC, in the red box it is called the SSCC that I would unplug the power from in step 1?

Sorry, but other then, what you saw about the read-out test, and the DES cleaning/assembling info, the MicroLog Trouble Shooting Guide is useless for that model---
---Yes as a 'general rule", in anything electrical, power should/must be off when installing or removing any plug--
I would clean the DES as the next step, as per the Guide--

Oh Oh!

Since I have two model 100-78Ds, I removed the PPC from the unit that was basically only selecting the A sides and placed it into the one that only lit up, to see if the unit would then respond. Well, it would now manually scan twice and not pick up a record. So, I know that unit also has its own problems. I then replaced the PPC back into the unit that was selecting the A sides. Much to my dismay, now the select light does not light up (free play) and the unit will not make any selections A or B side? The unit also will no longer respond to the battery test, where prior to this it would pick up every A & B side when the battery was used?

What in the world is going on here?

Manual calls for 7.5, 6 - 1/4, 1.6 and 4/10 of an amp fuse in the PPC

With a magnifying glass I cannot make out the numbers on all of the fusees and assume they are correct.

The 4/10 fuse (located on the printed board) is the only one that checks bad, so I assume this is the problem and will try to locate one. This is not a normal looking fuse, as it has a small spring, a piece of white material, a piece of copper and then what looks like lead. What properly identifies this type og fuse? Would it be safe to use a fast acting 1/2 amp/250 volt glass fuse instead of the 4/10?

Find a "kid with good eyes" to check fuse values ( that's what I gotta do --too, most times !)--they are marked--Is that marked "MDL" or"313" ?
If so, it's a "standard slow blow" type--IMHO, it is NEVER "safe" to use a larger fuse in anything--unless you are real familiar with the circuit--smaller if it's possible is safe--Ron Rich

Fuses right size & all OK. New problem. I purchased 3 manuals from VG to be able to repair my Magnastar and Celsestia Juke Boxes.

Voltages are off.

The only power supply schematic is for a "SCC9"

The power supply is a “PPC1 – 56 Code A" in the Celestia 100-78D

The schematic for a Type SCC9 Power supply is fused differently and appears to be wired differently.

I have a request into VG for the proper schematic.

Do you know what the differences are or where I can obtain a schematic for the
PPC1 - 56 Code A power supply?

I can not find my copy, at the moment, but I am 99.8% sure that the late Tony Miller had that schematic in his "Red Box & MCU systems" book. Ron Rich
