AMI D-80 Oiling Turntable

Hi:

A few questions from a newbie:

I have a nice AMI D-80 and I have oiled all the external points except the turntable itself. There's my issue(s).

I have read and reread the manual without much success.

I see a hole right in the middle of the turntable platter. Is that an oil point with the felt thru the shaft as the manual describes?

Next question, how does the turntable platter come off to get to the mechanism under it, as I read there are two holes in which I also need to add a drop or two of oil. Not quite sure how to get it off to get to the underside.

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks!!

Generally, the Turn Table (TT) needs to be removed to oil. If it has a thin tin cover (sometimes painted) in the center, this cover should lift off.
On some models, the TT is solid and must be lifted by the edge. If the cover was used on yours, and has been removed, two large "finger holes" should now be exposed--just lift straight up, in either case. Yes--that felt should be saturated with oil but I would suggest that you also oil the shaft, while it's out. Also--the motor should be oiled top and bottom.. On some phono's this will require that the motor be removed to reach the lower bearing--on some motors, an oil tube was supplied for that bearing. Also, you will need to use ONE drop of oil on the idler wheel shaft, and a drop or so on the slide. I strongly suggest that you use only SAE 20 wt. ND oil for this --( available as "3 in ONE MOTOR oil"---do not use 3 in ONE, multi-purpose, or household oil !) When replacing the TT, be sure you "kick" (with your finger), the idler wheel out of the way so the TT clears it, as it is seated.
While the motor is out--check the motor mounting grommets--if hard, or non-existent, new ones will be required ! Ron Rich
