SPS2 Questions

Hello all,

I was referred here by the guys at KLOV and had a few questions I hope someone could help me with. I've been fixing up a SPS2 for some time and I'm almost done, I only have some miner problems.

First I am having problems with the play control subtract switch under the mech. I have adjusted it to the manuals setting and I cannot get it to work right. I have checked the 2E2 in the DCC and it is not stuck but it is missing the fuse? that should be on it. The writing on the manuel is to small for me to see what it is. So I would like to know what should go on 2E2 and what is its purpose. Will it fix my play control subtract problem.

Second I have cleaned and relubed the entire mech. When it starts scanning from its resting place it sounds fine but on its way back something under the front of it is squeaking. Any clues as to why it doesn't squeak going one why but does the other?

Thank you for the help

Need more info--
What is the scan control switch doing/not doing ? There is no "fuse" anywhere near it ! Are you speaking of the .01/14kv cap that should be soldered across the motor control switch in the DCC ?
"Squeak" indicates that either one or more of the carriage wheels is not turning, or the "foot" on the tone arm cradle is miss-adjusted, or the "slides" on the popularity meter need oil.
What type of "lubes" are you using ?

Ok it is a cap that is missing at 2E2 and not a fuse, could not reed the small print. I can get the play control subtract switch to either not hit and stay in continuous scan. Or it will hit and it will stay energized making a loud buzzing noise. The mach will not roll back a bit to let off of it and I have adjusted it as the manual says to but it does not like me. I was hoping the missing cap at 2E2 had something to do with it. The lube on the mach is 20w non detergent oil and graphite grease like your book recommended. It will squeak one way but not the other and I can not find anything I have not oiled or greased.

Thankns again for the help

Thanks for buying the book !
Play selection # 179--stop the motor with the service switch. Look at the scan sub points under the TMU. The ramp should be positioned about centered in the screw holes, and the roller should not be touching the ramp. Loosen the screws and slide the ramp till it just touches the roller, or adjust the contact blades to achieve this. At that point, look at the contact gap (you will need to remove it's cover). It should be about 1/32 open. Adjust the blade to achieve that gap, if needed (Replace the cover !). Start the motor, and reject the record. Then watch that it pulses the scan sub coil in the DCC. At that point un-plug the DCC and work the scan add once, by hand. It should lock on the 2nd tooth. Then pulse the sub coil by hand (Push on the plunger, not the connection),and let go. It should now be locked in the first tooth, WITH THE NYLON portion of the unit still having a minimum of 1/64 in clearance, between it, and the contact blade. Let go of the plunger, nylon should push contacts "open". Contacts MUST be free of "pits" ( cap prevents them). If pitted see mech book.
Plug DCC back in and play # 179 and # 279. If it plays both and then scans once and back to rest, it's OK.
On the squeak--did you get all 6 rollers under the mech--did you put a light coating of oil on the popularity chrome slide bars ?

All problems have been solved... The contacts on the play control subtract switch and the DCC were extremely dirty and pitted.
I don't know why I did not think to check them. Also the squeak was an unlubed carriage guide roller.
Now for a few more questions, does anyone know where I could get the .01/14kv cap? Google turned up nothing and I have yet to buy caps on the net so I don't
know of any web sites to go to. Second I am going to need to change the ballasts, the big 30 watt ballast is bad and the two smaller 19 watts
are buzzing. Should I try to find magnetic ones or just rewire for the new electric start ones? What do you recommend?

Thank Again For The Help
