Seeking info on possible value.

by ariggs » Sat Jun 18, 2011 2:16 am

Hello all, and thank you for taking the time to read this question.

I recently obtained a RCA Cooperstown VHT46 am/fm radio and record player. The cabinet is in nearly mint condition. Everything works very well. The model number is VHT 46 L. The serial number is 61225661. It also has the original sales brochure, and several pamphlets that came with it when purchased. There is also several mint/nearly mint records with it.

I was wondering if this thing is worth anything from a collectors perspective?

In addition to that, I live in Portland Oregon. You could take the ugliest couch in the world that you picked up for free on the side of the road, stick it on CraigsList with the word "Vintage Couch" as the title, and probably sell the thing for $500 easy. Obviously I don't expect most people to account for that, but still...

Anyway, any info would be greatly appreciated.

You, among the other "1st posters" that log onto here in search of "the value" of things, will have to accept the fact that "vintage" doesn't always mean valuable.

Mint condition?......... nice.
Still not worth much.
It'll STILL need overhauling for more than its worth.
Thrift Stores sell 'em for $20.... with a huge "vintage" tag on 'em.

Epray sellers use those terms to entice the unwary... just like "retro", "Eames Era", "Art Deco"
So over-used terms...... and not even accurate.

Best thing to do with "aquired" stuff like that is to have it serviced properly to bring it up to snuff, and enjoy it.

As for "collectors" attraction, certain things must be involved, such as tier level, and overall rareness, something most of those consoles lack.

VHT46 is a common model.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Thank you kindly for your response. It actually came with several Christmas albums and some other good stuff from the mid 70's. My wife grabbed it as something she wanted to keep because of the nostalgia of it, and she thinks it will be fun to play with. My kids have been enjoying the old albums today, and I don't think it is something we want to get rid of. I was simply curious. If it was worth anything, I'd do things such as avoid my 4 year old climbing on it like he does everything else.

Enjoy it for its short-lived lifespan, since you allow small children to play with it.
Be advised that once the record changer is damaged, you'll be investing a hefty fee for repairs.
There's your "value".

Hello ariggs,
Welcome to forum.

I believe you guys will get a kick out of playing the
Old vinyl on your "new" stereo. I still have my grandmothers
Late 60's zenith allegro, still hearing those old albums
Is a lot of fun. My 4 year old loves it when dad let's her
Press the lever down to make the changer start working.
My two boys also get to see there was something else
Out there before cd's and iPods.
If changer gums up, usually a simple cleaning of
Mechanism works wonders.
There's been a lot of fun had around that old console.

Best wishes,

George raven

Thanks for the responses. The kids have been enjoying it as much as we have. My 10 year old is pretty amazed by the "giant" records. In regards to letting my 4 year old climb on it, I don't mean playing with it really. He's not allowed to touch anything inside the console. Though he does climb on everything, it's too high for him to get on currently. Plus there is a solid flip down wooden top on the console. Anyway, thanks again for all the responses. Take care.
