Hello all,
I have my machine back together! Everything appears to be working, except the one area I have neglected so far, sound! I have been doing my restoration with the amp unplugged ( per a post I thought made sense) and am just turning my attention to it. I plugged it in and it does seem to do something, fiddling with the audio controls cause static in the speakers and the tubes get very hot. No music however, but I think that bc my tone arm wires are in horrible shape (I can't solder!) I'm taking the amp to a guy to test the tubes and see if there are any obvious defects, any other suggestions? Can these be replaced easily with a more modern amp?

Others here may know better, but not knowing which juke you actually have, all i can say is -

You probably COULD replace it with a 'newer' one, but.. why? Tube amps are really nice in their sound, once they're all up to spec..!

"Tubes" is suppozzzed to get hot ! The filaments run at a very high temp. If the tube itself shows signs of being hot, it will "glow" red/purple, or "flair". Any tube doing that should not be used--but if happening, it will also require that the circuit be checked as the problem may be elsewhere.
IMHO, installing any amp not made for the phono, is a waste of time/money ! The jukebox makers all designed the whole sound system as a "package"--cart/needle specs, speaker specs, and amp specs, were designed for the cabinet enclosure used. Also, in some cases, you will have problems with the mute feature, as "home amps" are not designed for that feature.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I WANT to keep the original amp, I just want to know if it's working correctly. From what I can tell, the tubes are tooi hot to touch, and some glow orange on a small spot inside them. It's a Rockola 429 Starlet by the way. Also, the previous owner wrote on the amp the words " Bad pla mor". Not sure if this is a sentence, labeling of some sort, or gibberish. Any ideas?

Here are some pics of the amp while installed. I think everything is plugged in properly, except for a wire that has been severed from the low bass unit above the credit unit. Also, the terminals on the right have some wires attached but go to no speakers that I'm aware of. maybe you guys could let me know.

I was finally able to get some sound out of my Rock ola 429. However, after about three plays of Elvis' "Blue Christmas" I can hear nothing out of the speakers. I originally got it to play by blindly jiggling some temporary connections I had made on the wire between the needle assembly and its spot on the amp ( the old one was severed at some point.) I want to make this wire permanent, but cannot find and proper replacement and am a little leery of using the cut up headphone cable that I'm using now! Any suggestions?

Any chance it may a defect in the mute relay inside the amp, any noise from the needle when you touch it when a record is playing and not playing
