Silver-Tongued Record Label

by wand143 » Thu Nov 15, 2007 8:34 pm

Anyone have any information on this early 78 label? I wasn't able to find it pictured in the L. Docks guide. It's an older one-sided record. I paid $3 for it even though it was just a typical contemporary instrumental track. I just liked the label name so much...and of course, it is a silver-colored label!

I'm not familiar with that label, but I thought I'd try a little "googling" to see if I could come up with anything...

First, I spotted one photo. Is it like this one?

According to the information provided here -- http://www.78rpm.net.nz/78s/storeslabels.htm
it was sold by the Englewood Company, a Chicago-based mail order firm.

I found one more reference, and if I'm interpreting the information on this site correctly -- SEE: http://www.denvernightingale.com/discography/index.html -- the New Improved Silver-Tongued record was one of many "client labels" that Columbia produced for distribution by dime-stores, mail-order companies, etc.

That's the one. I wasn't surprised about the fact that it was a "contracted" label - I'm sure the big names had a fix on a lot of the disc records available in those days; not much room for independent labels, I'll bet.
Funny that I should be directed to a Billy Murray website - I tried collecting his records when I started getting into the earlier comedy records. Based on that discography, I'd be trying for DECADES to complete a collection!!!
