Capacitor replacement question

by Wurlitzer_1800 » Wed Jan 02, 2013 11:44 pm

Hi guys, I'm restoring a couple of old radios and I have to replace the multi section cardbord electrolytic capacitors. I couldnt find the same value caps. Can I replace a 50uf, 50uf 150V with a 47uf, 47uf 160v? And also can I replace a 80uf, 40uf, 150v with a 80uf, 47uf 160v? I know you can go higher on the voltage but I'm not sure if I can change the capacitance this much? Thanks

As far as I have been "learned"--You NEVER want to use a lower voltage cap--higher is OK--
As for uf---47 uf is the same as 50 uf--for some reason, makers have changed the way ratings are written. Old rule was never go lower then 10 % on uf rating--if not a "timing circuit", 100% larger value is of no problem--HTH Ron Rich
