by wisfan88 » Fri Jan 20, 2012 5:18 am

I have a victor that I'm trying to date. The model number is VHT 90WK but i can't find anything about it. Also if anyone knows what cartridge and needle are needed that would be great too.

Send flowers and a nice card with "I'd like to date you, how bout dinner and a movie?"

Seriously, mid-sixties model.

Is the cartridge missing?

Those sets are known for having bad capacitors thoughout the radio chassis.
I just did a restoration on one similar to it.
Several burned up safety caps too.
Left to run "as is", it'll eventually take out the hard to find and quite expensive germanium output transistors.

As well, the record changer will also need service
After 40+ years it's advised.

Ditto Matt. Have it gone over by a good tech.

What kind of place would have a technician that would be able to work on this?

Sadly, there are few shops scattered across this country that could provide the needed servicing these vintages units require.
And even among them, the quality of "restoration" varies.
I've seen the work of other shops, some aren't too pretty.

But this console nevertheless has an easy to work on chassis - and it doesn't take too much to bring it up to reliable status.
An improvement in sound is also a result of this.
So I can't see why a shop would even want to do sloppy, incomplete work.
Same goes for the record changer- parts are available, and once serviced, they play fine without problems.

The customers that have brought me in these sets all say they've hunted around only to hear a lot of shops "not wanting to get involved" in these sets.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that their simply not geared up for these, and/or their staff hasn't had any experience on them, being younger.
(30 year old college grads most likely never saw a record changer in person)

If nothing turns up locally, there is a bright side.
Knowing these sets well, I can say they're relatively easy for most people to dissasemble and ship to a repair shop, leaving the cabinet & speakers at home.
As for me, I can certainly provide the service, turnaround is a few weeks, so if interested, PM me for info.
