Charmaphone

by Chersome » Tue Oct 17, 2006 7:27 pm

I've come across a cabinet from The Charmaphone Co. The player has been removed, I'm looking for any info so i can date this piece, the cabinet is a tall floor model. The label is still inside, and the cabinet itself is in in fair condition, for its age I'm guessing 1918, from what Ive found so far. Charmaphone may have been part of the R.L. Kenyon Manufacturing Co. in NYC. Any info is greatly appreciated! -Cheryle

Hi Doug:

I suspect that the original poster is long gone. She only logged into this forum one time, to make the post, and never logged back in--perhaps discouraged by the fact that there were no responses.

As for the Charmaphone, the bad news is that it is one of hundreds of off-brand models that were produced in the late nineteen teens into the early 1920s; probably of a limited production run and sales. This article provides a history of these "Victrola Clones": http://www.antiquephono.org/brand-talki ... j-wakeman/ Normally, you'll find very little information about any specific model, other than ads. (I found several by Googling Charmaphone Phonograph OR Gramophone.)

As for parts, the good news is that many if not most of the off-brand models were assembled using parts supplied by third party manufacturers, so the same cabinet, horn, motor, tonearm, reproducer ("sound box") may be found on dozens of different branded models sold by different companies. This increases your chance of finding needed components.

Please post back with some photos. This might help in identifying what you need.

Joe
