Hey there everyone!! Been QUITE a while since I've been on the forum...


I recently got a edison S-19 player, it's almost immaculate. I'm unfamiliar with the diamond disc players however. I put a nice clean DD record on, cleaned the feed prawl etc, oiled everything, and fired it up. I noticed it skips every now and then. Now one thing I noticed, was that the reproducer was a LONG type...I'm guessing for the 40 min records. After extensive googling I found that they are angled and made to track better in the long records.

So my question is this:
Do I need a regular DD reproducer to play the regular DD's? Or will the LONG one work for regular ones? I ask this because of the skipping. I don't see anything that would cause it mechanically wise...so I figured it could be a reproducer issue. I can't find any info on this.

The Edison LP (Long Play) reproducer was fitted with a much finer stylus than the conventional Edison Diamond Disc reproducer in order to fit the LP groove which was 400/inch, so no, it will not work well with a standard Edison Diamond Disc record.

At best, you'd probably damage the stylus and possibly the record, and of course, skipping will also be an issue.

If you don't plan to acquire any Edison LP records--they are rare as hens teeth--you could probably swap this for a standard Edison DD reproducer, or purchase a replacement. Edison Diamond Disc reproducers come up for sale all the time on sites such as Craigslist.

Thank you so much for the information! My hunt begins for a good reproducer then. I only paid 200 for the whole player and it looks and works great. Weird though, I haven't seen many S-19 models with the record size selector buttons online. It also has the metal tab installed on the horn, so I'm guessing it's original. Is the model number right? All the ones I've seen don't have this option.

And if you don't mind me asking, if I do swap someone for a regular DD reproducer, how much is the long play one worth? So I don't get swindled lol. Thanks again!

I'm not all that familiar with Edison DD models, so I can't answer your questions about the S-19. Hopefully, someone who does will chime in.

As for the value of a Long Play reproducer, I've seen these come up for sale from time to time on eBay. Your best best might be to hang onto the one you have until you spot another for sale on eBay and track the auction to see what the final selling price is. That will give you some idea of the current going rate.
