it's a Decca Rally with single spring Garrard motor dating from mid 1930's

It has arrived here, and I must say that i'm very happy with this little machine.
The only 'thing' is is that it has a Dulceola reproducer fitted, but is that original? (I don't think so)
So what brand/type should be on it?

Dulceola was the term (name) used by Decca for its internal horn cabinet machines from the 1920's onwards so it's not exactly "out of place" on a Decca portable either. Good question though: should it be on a "Rally"? Most 1930's Decca portables seem to have a generic Swiss made soundbox which is actually not very good. It doesn't say anything on the soundbox itself but the fascia is normally black with the rest being nickle plated. But I can't remember seeing one of THESE on a "Rally" either!

I'll keep my eyes open for you and if I see one which is obviously correct, I'll get back to you again!

Sorry it's a bit of a non-answer at the moment but I certainly wouldn't be in any rush to swap it yet if I were you as it might very well be "right".

I tried in vain to get other collectors to discuss Decca on this board last year - not a single reply so there are many other questions that I have which still need answering!

For instance, what motor belongs in a Decca Style 4 portable?

How much price difference was there between Salon 10, 30, 110 etc? What motor (Garrard) differences were there between models?

Anyone preparing a book on Decca portables?

Thank you Steve for your answer.

Visited yesterday the 78 rpm/gramophone collectors society of Holland de Weergever and look what I found there in one of their old magazine's...

And yes the reproducer looks like an unbranded one

Hello, Eng Bo - yes, that IS the soundbox I was refering to with black enamel fascia plate and nickle plated elsewhere. I have actually got a spare one of these but unfortunately it is in an original gold finish!

I'm sure you'll be able to locate one on Ebay though?

Happy hunting

Steve

I've located one for sale here in Holland already. But the original Decca gramophone is still attached to it. Let's see if they accept my bid...

Steve,
What info do you have on Decca? I saw pictures posted and it said SALON - which is what I have. I have just acquired mine and need whatever assistance and guidance possible.
Thanks,
MaryLynn :D

I have no info' on Decca whatsoever and as I said previously earlier in this thread, when I advertised for info' last year I received NIL replies - that (to my mind at least) means one of two things. Either NO info' exists on Decca anywhere OR those people who have it aren't "talkers" and don't wish to share their knowledge?

Can you be a little more specific about what it is you've just acquired and also the nature of what it is you wish to know about it? Without these answers I doubt anyone will be able to offer you help. Salon is a trade name for any of the small Decca machines with internal horns, cabinet types etc.

Regards

Steve
