Actually, the Cobramatic had a compromise needle which was supposed to fit both kinds of grooves, but which fit neither very well.

I use my modified Collaro Conquest with a Shure M44E cartridge, with the N44-3 for 78s. I can play 78s at 2.5 grams with that! I also have a Lenco L-78 for the odd speed records (70, 71, 75, 76, 80, 85, and 90 rpm).

I should have done my homework before buying the Cobramatic. Oh well, I'll get it fixed and trade it when I get tired of it. However, when I decide to get really serious about a vintage record changer, I'll definitely consult you.

Are their better, reto-fit needles for the Cobramatic?

As I recall, Astatic made regular needle tips for that changer. The inconvenience was changing them when you changed speeds.
