How do you hookup a Rowe AMI CD-WB Wallette Wallbox

by jeffp » Sun Nov 24, 2013 7:26 pm

I just won a used/refurbished Rowe AMI CD-WB Wallette Wallbox on Ebay for $89.00 This guy sells them on Ebay for $89.00 everyday...

From what I have found online, I think the following is correct but I wanted to share this with the group .

WallBox Ac Power - Connects to the 2 Yellows wires of the Transformer Output.
WallBox Power Com - Connects to Black wire of the Transformer Output.
WallBox Left CH. - Connects to the Left E3 Speaker Output Terminal inside the Jukebox.
WallBox Right CH. - Connects to the Right E3 Speaker Output Terminal inside the Jukebox.
WallBox Audio Com - Right E1 Speaker Output Terminal inside the Jukebox.
WallBox Rowlink A - Splice A Oranges together then splice into CCC P12 Orange
WallBox Rowlink A - Splice A Oranges together then splice into CCC P12 Orange
WallBox Rowlink B - Splice B Whites together then splice into CCC P12 White
WallBox Rowlink B - Splice B Whites together then splice into CCC P12 White
WallBox Terminal Strip Lower Mounting Screw - appears to have had a wire on it? Do I need to send a ground wire from this location back to the jukebox? If so, do I need 8 conductor wire?

So I went to RadioShack today and I bought a 25.2VAC 2 amp “Power Transformer” #271-1512B to power up the WallBox.
It has 2 Black wires that go to a plug on one side and 2 Yellow wires and 1 Black wire coming out of the other side that go to the WallBox. As per the instructions on the back of the package, If I want 25.2V output I have to put the 2 Yellow wires together.

I also bought a Radio Shack 2 prong non-grounding plug #0423054 and a “Inline Fuse Holder” #270-1281 that I plan to attach between the transformer and the 2 prong plug. I also bought a Radio Shack 3 prong grounding plug #0423056 just in case I need grounding for this application.

I went to Lowes and bought 50 feet of 18 gauge, 7 conductor, 30 Volt, Low Voltage Outdoor Direct Burial Sprinkler Wire.
Lowes did not have any 8 conductor sprinkler wire in stock. They did have 18 gauge 8 conductor thermostat wire but I could not confirm if it could handle 30 volts or not (I left my glasses home).

My questions are as follows:

1. What size fuse do I need in the “Inline Fuse Holder” and does the fuse go on the input or output side of the transformer?

2. Do I use a 2 prong or 3 prong plug and if it is a 3 prong plug, where do I attach the 3rd ground wire to?

3. Can I get away with using a 7 conductor wire or do I need 8 conductor wire for the terminal strip ground, and if I do need 8 conductor wire, where do I attach the terminal strip ground to on the jukebox side.

4. I think I need to attach the WallBox Audio Com to the E1 Speaker Output Terminal inside the Jukebox But E1 is used on the left side, Do I attach it to E1 on the right side or somewhere else?

As always… Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

I also just purchased one of these, I didnt get it from "the dude" however and found a buy it now.. man mine was stinky smoke ended up putting it in the dishwasher made it all clean again!

note that you just hookup the "A unit" for one wall box. so to describe better.. just put orange to orangeA and white to whiteA (dont use B)
the amperage is very low, 24v is just used for powering the computer. I just jacked 24v off the lights for the "spinning CD display" as I replaced the lights with LED strips. that way i didn't need to get a new transformer for the power.. I haven't bothered metering it but I doubt it uses more then those nasty bulbs.. I also LED the wallbox.

if you use another transformer like radio shack just plug it into the service port.. 2 prong then run the remote to your wallbox.. I saw someone say once be careful of different voltages.. (aka ground shorts in your mains) again .. I didnt care much personally as I just stole power from the main transformer (at 29v even with 100ft run I still have 24+ at the end) that said.. be safe and dont ground it.

Use the E1 tap for Audio Com and the Left/Right E3 taps to the L CH and R CH., is this residential? the speakers on these little guys arnt much to shake a stick at. If your running wire just wire up a remote zone and use the WB as the "remote"

"lower Mounting Screw - appears to have had a wire on it? " - its just a bridge to the RowLinkB-White - no dont need it. (assuming one wallbox residential)

Thanks so much for the info SpudGunMan...

I was beginning to think that I was all alone on this one...

Yes this is for home use and I will only have one wallbox, so I will not hook up the "B" RoweLink's to the Orange and White's on my P12 CCC.

Where can I get the bulbs to convert my Jukes over to LED's. Is it just a bulb replacement? That sounds like a really good idea....

I'm always replacing bulbs for the following:
A 2004 Antique Apparatus Rockola Nosatlgia CD Bubbler, a 1989 Antique Apparatus Gazelle CD with Rowe AMI guts (that I'm putting this wallbox on), a 1989 Wurlitzer OMT 45, and the following Seeburgs: 1957 KD200, 1956 VL200, 1955 VL200, 5 - 1954 HF100R's, and a 1952 M100C.

I just checked out both of those websites... Nice... I would have never thought that there would be so many LED bulbs available for our applications... They are definitely bookmark and save websites.

Guy's
Only one problem--lamps used in those "jukeboxes" are NOT # 47', or # 44's--
The AA/Rowe uses # 1819's ( wired in series/pairs of two), as do the others--I think.
Extreme caution is advised if lamp is "transistor driven", as use of any other lamp then specified, can "blow-up" the drivers--

We never had any CD wallboxes on our route. However, we did still use Seeburg wallboxes with an LPC-1 juke on location until about ten years ago.

I can think of a couple of locations were we had a Rowe CD100 jukebox where I wish we would have had CD wallboxes, but the boss balked at the purchase price of the wallboxes.

I don't think I've ever seen the manual on the CD wallboxes. I know they issued them, but I never got to read them.

Hey Ken,
You were lucky--your boss was right--I "messed with" operating one of the "satellite" type, once--
They weren't really practical, as they were larger then today's "downloader", due to the requirement of covers/title strips, plus, I think this one had an aux amp installed--speakers, for sure !

Good point Ron... I will use caution if I look into that route in the future.

From what I understand.... These wallboxes at least the one I have retailed for over a $1000.00 from Rowe. Having a restaurant or diner with 10 or more wallboxes would be more than a $10,000.00 investment.... I can't imagine how long it would take for an owner to make a profit on an investment like this.

There is a manual available.... I ordered it from Bruce at ABJukeboxRepair, Its in the mail as I type this.

I started the process of looking at the schematics - I actually question if it will be a problem.. I have left the juke on all night and I see no heat or damage to the LED yet. This is a low priority project.. but my main goal here is looking into tapping the 28v for the lights for use on the wall box, and any side effects that could have.. that is my real end game.. the lights are cheap enough (I do pinball so have lots) that I can test with them with low cost. as for the transistor failure that is also a cheap repair. (be it a repair that when this is rocking the house I would rather not deal with)

Here’s an update…..

With my new CD-WB Wallette Field Service Manual and Parts Catalog and the following wiring diagram along with the following items purchased, I have been able to Successfully Hook-Up a CD-WB Wallette Wallbox to my 1989 Antique Apparatus CD Gazelle Bubbler.

Specs:
Model: GB4CD Serial: 15008 (Maybe 1989)
Mechanism Control Computer: 61086202 (Has been updated from Original)
Central Control Computer: 40832201 (V 4.3 - Has been updated from Original)
CD-Pro Mechanism with Pro-2 Player (Has been updated from Original)
Power Supply: 6-09377-0 (New Power Supply Board 61086501)
250 Watt Stereo Amp: 61024901

These are the items that I purchased to do this:

Rowe CD-WB Wallette Wallbox, Ebay $89.00

RadioShack, 25.2VAC 2 amp “Power Transformer” #271-1512B $14.49
(Note: Only the 2 Yellow wires on transformer output side are used, the Black wire on the output side is not used.)

Lowes, 2 prong non-grounding plug $1.97

Radio Shack, Inline Fuse Holder #270-1281 (I used a 3 Amp Fuse) $2.49

Lowes, 50 feet of 18 gauge, 7 conductor, 30 Volt, Low Voltage Outdoor Direct Burial Sprinkler Wire $18.44

Here’s how I wired it up:

Wallbox Ac Power - Connects to the first Yellow wire on the output side of the Transformer.
Wallbox Power Com - Connects to the second Yellow wire on the output side of the Transformer.
Wallbox Left CH. - Connects to the Left E7 Speaker Output Terminal inside the Jukebox.
Wallbox Right CH. - Connects to the Right E7 Speaker Output Terminal inside the Jukebox.
Wallbox Audio Com - Connects to the Right E1 Speaker Output Terminal inside the Jukebox.
Wallbox Rowlink A - Plug in or Splice into P10, P11 or P12 “Orange” wire found going into the CCC inside the Jukebox.
Wallbox Rowlink A - Not Used when only hooking up 1 wallbox.
Wallbox Rowlink B - Plug in or Splice into P10, P11 or P12 “White” wire found going into the CCC inside the jukebox.
Wallbox Rowlink B - Not Used when only hooking up 1 wallbox.

I hope that this information can help someone in the future wanting to do the same thing.

Thanks
Jeff P.

Jeff,
Thanks for the update--
Two "comments"--
I would reduce that fuse size to 1 amp FB, on the 25 vac side.
2. I would not use "sprinkler wire" for that app--I would use 18, ga. stranded--16 ga., stranded, for power.

Thanks Ron....

Now that I have a proof of concept I will definitely refine it with the proper fuse size and wires....
