Hi! Have a very old wooden Magnavox console that for the most part works very well, except i occasionally get static. The record will still play just fine, but every now and then i will hear static that fluctuates in volume and eventually goes away. It's getting more frequent as well. I recently replaced the stylus. I just got this console and love it but don't as of yet know a whole lot about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

A little more information please on your Magnavox. Tube or solid state, model number, chassis number, record changer numbers, has set been upgraded with some new caps. But the noise you hear could even be dust or fuzz build-up. Or your records. Or your needle. Or...

I bet he cartridge is crapping out.
it's done.

I bet it's an old Tetrad with bad contacts.

Time to invest in an upgrade/replacement.

Unless the controls/switches are dirt/falulty, consider a replacement cartridge.

I had this same problem either playing the phono or AM radio and I found a loose vacume tube ( if you have tubes).
Every time I rocked the tube back and forth a little, i would get that loud static.

I've never experienced a cartridge crapping out, other than that "saddle" and its two connections making one channel louder than the other and had to kinda wiggle the stylis to pop both channels back in order. It is something to consider, though. What about those little (I don't know the proper term) interstage, driver transistors mounted in the preamp section where all the phono/radio/aux input passes through, or the larger transistors near the end of the audio chain. --BB

This could also be a dirty selector switch, volume control, or other control (e.g.bass).
