Cartridge?

by netfire_ » Sat Nov 13, 2010 9:17 pm

Does any one know where to get a cartridge for a Magnavox s600 turntable? Believe it is also known as a magnavox micromatic imperial. I have looked everywhere for a replacement, and have not found a thing!

Get the number off your cartridge and go from there. Then check out the FAQ near the top of the Electronic Gramophones and Phonographs forum. Where you usually find needles, you may also find cartridges. Your cartridge may have several numbers on it.

For example,
an EV275 crosses to a Magnavox 560345 (.25 volts)
an EV256 crosses to a Magnavox 560315 (.55 volts)
an EV257 crosses to a Magnavox 560310 (.25 volts)
an EV258 crosses to a Magnavox 560340 (.55 volts)

Sorry, I didn't check for the Astatic equivalents, but I've got them listed somewhere amongst all my junk. --BB

Oops, I guess I could have put that in the first post. It's an electrovoice 132. The problem is no one apparently no one sells them, and no one has done so in recent memory.

You need to search ebay, include search "description" and you will come up with subs for EV 132. They work fine. Good deals on ebay with any of the big sellers.

I didn't come up with any thing. There may just not be any, anywhere.

If you are specifically wanting an EV-132, none listed on Ebay at this time. I'm not going to search the web since you indicate you have. But on Ebay for replacement take a look at these if interested. Item #'s 130445771944, 200448159004, and 200496561092.

Normally, I would simply substitute another cartridge, but the way these tonearms are designed, it can only be replaced by the same cartridge. The metal mounting bracket that the cartridge clips into is riveted to the metal cartridge holder that is held to the arm by a single screw from the top. It is not held in place by two small screws like in a normal tone arm. On the cartridge holder is Magnavox part number 560305-1. There are only three wires with the flat terminal pins. The two negatives on this four-pin cartridge are connected with a tiny wire bridge.

Can you post a clear close-up photo of the cartridge? I am willing to bet that there is a cartridge available that will fit into the existing mounting clip.

I have seen several cartridges out there that come with their own mounting bracket. Some have both a single hole and the indentations on the side to use two screws. Garage-a-records used to (and maybe still do) have quite a few. I've got three Astronics with the black, curved tonearm, and they all have different cartridges with their own mounting brackets.--BB

Another good source for cartridges is http://www.turntableneedles.com/.
They have pictures of each cartridge and that might help you find one that fits your tone arm.
FYI, I have a Magnavox console with a similar turntable with the curved black tone arm. It came with a EV 150 cartridge and according to the service manual it also takes an Astatic 461. They both have a single screw that attaches the metal clip to the tone arm.

Actually, I just had to pay some one to modify a similar vintage cartridge to fit. Apparently this took quite a bit of doing, but the problem is resolved! Hurrah. lol
Thanks for the help offered to every one on here.

Good for you.

I hope your similar cartridge has the same output voltage. If not, you'll be lacking in volume (maybe some bass, too).

While on that subject, how do you increase the output of an EV275/Astatic 165D found in the new W620 series turntables to work in an older Astronic with the black tonearm. I did a modification at one time mounting one of those skinny cartridges into one of these older micromatics. It sounded nice, but the volume was low. I think the original cartridge put out close to 1 volt, while the EV275 put out about .25 volts.

I don't mean adding a preamp, just possibly changing out a few semiconductors in that preamp stage on the chassis to boost the output. --BB

Volume is, to say the least, not a problem. It sounds amazing. The cartridge I used was an EV 26 having switched from an ev 132, and the turn table is a s600. I'm not sure about changing semiconductors. That's a bit over my head sorry to say.

I put a Shure M44E pickup into one of those. Of course, the pickup needs a magnetic pickup preamp.

I measured the point where the stylus is on both pickups, cut the mounting tab off the old pickup, and super glued it to the new one to mount it. Then I cut the two screw mounting ears off, so it would fit.

I had to make a second counterweight to counterbalance the heavier pickup. And the added thickness required reducing the maximum stack from 10 records to 8.
