My Magnavox Phonograph

I got this machine from a cousin, along with a bunch of 78's. It does play, however I can not get it to start automatically? It will not drop the record, and put the needle on, so I have to do it manually.

Well, first of all, congratulations on getting that fine portable, I have that identical model down to the colors, and mine does all of its intended functions, except it needs new needles. The record changer was made by Voice of Music for Magnavox's lower cost sets, and should be an easy fix, hopefully the VM experts will clue us in.

Photo Booth on my I-mac computer. Takes the photos, backwards, and I do not know why?

Reminds me of my E.L.O album..... the one cut contains music/lytics in reverse, and if you spin the record backwards, they chant "The music...... is reversable!...... go back!...... go back!"

That model reminds me of the VM machines we had back in 1965. I think I was in 5th grade around then. They had a brown case with beige interior, and had the automatic record changers. I would love to find one of those. By the way, what type of record changer is in there? The only Maggie portable I came accross is this, and one of my school mates gave it to me back in 1974. It was out in the garage and rarely used. I believe it dates around 1968 and still have it.

I would also like to find the old school Wollensak reel machines that I got rid of years ago. They had all metal casing and were silver/beige and you had to remove the lid to use it. They had that front speaker grill and the volume/tone controls in front. Maybe I can find a pic when I go through all my old stuff. --BB

Bobby, that is my dream Magnavox portable, any color will do! That one specifically, and on an alternate choice, the older changer with or without the radio.

I love that old Maggie ad with its suggestive marketing: "...No tubes to burn out, no component-damaging heat"Just to get people to buy solid state.....upgrade!
We all know that after 80 years some radios still have all their original tubes..... still good in fact!

I've yet to come across a vintage item damaged by "heat", unless it sat in a parked car in Arizona sunshine.

I dono guys--
I have "been involved" in two different lawsuits over non-tube type devices. Both of which "caused a fire".
Both manufacturing companies were required ( or their insurance companies), to "pay off", as the jurys decided that the "engineering" was at fault.
"Tubes" are NOT the only "electronic things" that get hot !! Ron Rich

I know transistor equipment puts out quite a bit of heat too, I posted the ad as an example of the set I'm looking for. I know most claims from all companies are a lot of hype, but it's interesting to read about vintage products anyway, in their original appearances.

It looks like a great player, I don't care personally for that model changer though. I also don't believe it's a BSR Monarch. General Electric in my opinion, made some pretty good portable record players.

I had two of those GE models back in the past. The only difference was, that one had "thicker" speakers like the model posted above, and the second unit had speakers that were barely 3" deep. Go figure. --BB

P.S. I found the ad to the Mono Wollensak I mentioned earlier. Damn, I had two of them and let them go. They were nice machines and recorded great. It seems like the mono version is running from $19.99 to $189.00 on Ebay, whle the the Stereo version is selling for $375. humm.

Since that is a V-M changer, the usual reason for no automatic is a bent trip slide. It happens when someone tries to keep the changer from turning itself off by grabbing the knob. It could also be gummed grease in the trip friction clutch.

That GE changer is NOT a BSR UA-8. Somebody put the wrong instruction disc on it.
