Seeburg 220 - records skipping

by 50something » Fri Sep 07, 2012 6:29 pm

Hi all,
Having recently acquired a Seeburg 220, care of the previous home owner who included it as part of the home deal, I'm delighted that it works - except for one problem (you've probably all heard that before). Too often the 45's skip and get stuck in a groove right near the end of play. Not all records, not all of the time for the same record - and it can happen on either side.

As a newbie, what I've read thus far tells me that the tone-arm may be getting resistance near the end of play from (a) mis-adjusted counter-balance spring on the trip switch, or (b) the trip switch itself, or (c) the wire at the end of the tone-arm has stiffened and is providing resistance, or (d) all of the above.

With the benefit of the operator and troubleshooting manuals, I believe I can try to adjust the trip switch spring. Any suggestions before I go anywhere near the mech? And yes, I'm reasonably handy.

Thanks!
Karl

ps - I believe the prior owner may have purchased this unit from CSSK Amusements (aka Chuck Martin) from York PA. Does anyone know how to contact Chuck? Listed numbers are disconnected. I'd love to know what re-conditioning he may have performed ... Thx

Karl,
Congrats ! You have done did your research well--the only thing you have missed that could be the cause of your problem is the
pick-up "lock lever bar", or "pin" (sometimes bent !) Ron Rich

Re: Seeburg 220 - records skipping, now the WOM

by 50something » Thu Sep 27, 2012 9:52 pm

Ron,
Thanks for the advice. It was the counter-balance spring on the trip switch that was out of proper position (I'm sure you would have spotted it quickly). Nice to hear the records play all the way through...

Next problem that showed up last night is my 3W1 WOM - and I didn't have a chance to open things up yet. The jukebox properly selects/plays, but when I make selections from the WOM, it randomly selects/plays something other than what I've selected. From your posts and others, I'll check to make sure the WOM motor/gears are lubricated and that the 2050 is in good shape. Any suggestions on the next few likely causes of this problem? The receiver has been recapped.

Thanks again,
Karl

Karl,
You are welcome--gladyou "got=it"!
On the WOM--it might also be a lack of lubrication in the stepper, and or poorly adjusted cotacts--see the service manual--and I'm sure you can figure that out also--it's easier in most cases, then the problem you just fixed !

Ron,
Just a quick update - stepper unit was never recapped, so having cleaned and oiled WOM and stepper without any luck, that's next. But just to add to the fun, the jukebox stopped selecting, mech just scans twice and stops - so I'll troubleshoot that per the I&O Tormat guide. I also purchased new tubes for receiver just because...

Hurricane Sandy didn't help in making progress. My 8500W generator did get a nice workout though.
Hopefully more progress to report next time.
