SS160 Scans 2x then stops Tormat Wiring?

by Ramblinman » Fri Dec 20, 2013 8:02 pm

My SS160 has been running fine for a year or so, It sees almost daily use. It has recently started to Scan 2x then stop. It was left off for a week an it began working again but after about 10 songs it started to Scan 2x then stop again. The next day it would only play 5 selections then 2..then 1.

I thought I had isolated this to C3114, the "write-in" CAP and replaced it. I also replaced C3110, "READ-OUT" CAP and C3106 & C3107.
I planned to replace all the caps in the SSCC but wanted to see if the this fixed the problem. After Recapping the Unit then appeared to be working again but after 10 or so selections it stopped working again and will only scan 2x. I then decided to redo Troubleshooting procedure 17ss for a Scan2x error. I got these Results.....

Test A,loose plugs = none found
Test B Trip Circuit = Mech trips with D cell Batt hooked too sense loop input.
Test C Read-out Circuit = unit plays at least 2 records with batt power applied to Tormat, Proceed to test E
Test E Write-in Circuit = 115v Neon lamp DOES FLASH once when connected to test points 6,7 and a selection is made ( I did not run a 330k resistor in series with Lamp) Go back to test D

TEST D Read-out Circuit, the LAmp when connected to test point 2 and GND does light. When connected to points 2&3 the lamp flashes.

The book says the results indicate defective wiring or defective Tormat. I replaced the Sense loop RCA connector last year it seems fine.
Think the Tormat is supposed to be quite reliable and the wiring looks good and the unit will work if left off for an extended period off time. I'd welcome any suggestions as to where or what to test or check next.

Hi,
Don't quite understand your saying "__mech trips--with D cell--hooked to sense loop".
If you are saying that it makes EVERY selection, in order, after you change torrid states, with the D cell, I would assume that you have a problem in the write-in system. Be that the case, it's most likely that the insulator side of the "k" contact is dirty. To "fix" this, I recommend you remove the "fingers", clean both of the "pads", and fingers, with 91% alcohol. and re-assemble as per the service manual. Ron Rich

Ron,

ThAnk you for you quick response and instructions. too clarify the Juke does make EVERY selection, in order, if you change torrid states, with a D cell Battery. What I meant to communicate is that It will also trip and play if you connect the positive side of a battery momentarily to the TMU socket on the Control center Chassis as outlined in -B test-.

I also forgot to mention that the pricing unit has been replaced with a Free Play box built by Vern Schmitt/ D-J Systems.

Hi Man,
I would NOT suspect the problem to be with the FPA--been using/selling them for years, only saw one, "bad one". Have you checked voltages in the SCC ? Do so when cold, and after it begins to fail--resistor changing values ?? See the note on the schematic about the 150 vdc--
