Help with my magnavox micromatic stereo

First of all I know little to nothing about vinyls, turntables, etc. All i know is that i have a magnavox micromatic stereo and it doesn't 100% work. When I turn it on there is a really loud hum which i don't think is good and when i try to play a record the needle goes REALLY crazy.

Here is the information i found on the inside of it when i took the back of the stereo off:

model # 1S0601
serial # 2652663

the tag i found these numbers on was a little hard to read so i'm not positive about the model number. the zereos could be o's...i'm not really sure.

i also found this other tag on the bottom of the turn table:
model # W.603-09-01
serial # 6336
part # 523456-11

I think the biggest problem is the needle and its arm. when i turn it on it moves over to the record then goes back to where it started from. To get it to play i have to manually move it over and it should do that automatically. plus when it does "play" it skips constantly on every record i put in even when there are no scratches!? I think the needle is completley shot and i dont know where to find a new one or which one i would need.

When i took the cartridge out i found these numbers on it: _Y158 (the firrst number or letter was cut off I think) the needle had a number on it too (atleast i think that's what this number is): 360310-1

can anyone help? i hope i've given enough information. i will be extremely greatful for anything u can tell me on how to fix my stereo. :D

The micromatic is different than a regular turntable. It automaticly senses the size of the record and drops the needle at the begining of the record. Set a record at the top of the spindle, swing the leveling arm over the record and switch to auto . The tone arm should rise swing to the record, tap the edge of the record, record should drop and needle set down at the begining of the record.
As for the buzz or hum it could be a loose RCA plug or whatever configuration depending on what type console or portable or component system. Possible broken connection at the cartridge, or bad filter caps in the amp. Alot depends on the type of system. As for needle and cartridge check Ebay as very helpful stores for easy cross referencing.
Hope this helps

**I'm finished restoring my stereo but looking for info on a bulb at bottom of front pannel, looking for any info on the bulb if you have any such information.

Remove the bulb (if it's still there) and look at the number on it. These pilot lights/miniature lamps are usually labeled "1847 or GE 1847." They may still be found at Radio Shack in-store and/or online, as well as other electronic parts sites. Those same bulbs are also used to light up the the inside of the tuner faceplate. Our local electronics store in Tucson sells them by the boxed dozen for a decent price. Can't remember, it's been so long. --BB

Iffin it's supposed to be an 1847, you may use a #47, in it's place--the 1847 is a "rugged-ized" 47--just won't last quite as long-- Ron Rich
