R-80 indexes correctly after awhile.

So I have been putting my R-80 through some testing because since I picked it up it has had some issues with selecting the right song.

General findings is it seems to get more accurate the more songs I would select. After making about 20 or so selections it was hitting every song selection perfectly. Before that it would be selecting one song off occasionally or sometimes getting hung up to the point of me having to hit other buttons to get the selector wheel to stop spinning.

So once I got it to the point of hitting on every selection correctly I turned the juke off for about a half hour and came back. Made some selections and it started off the first few selections being off or getting hung up and then eventually fell back in line and making correct selections everytime again.

I will post more detailed findings when I get home from work but anyone know what may cause this phenomenom?

Ok so when I got home I made 10 random selections.


N3 -- Played Q3
P6 -- Played R6
T7 -- Played V7
L6 -- Played N6
L0 -- Played L0
R4 -- Played R4
A2 -- Got hung up and press another button to get the search unit to stop endlessly spinning. See below.)
E7 -- Played E7
L9 -- Played L9
U7 -- Played U7

So after a few selections, 4 in this case, it gets on track with playing the right selections.

I have had an issue with a lot of the selections in the 2's and 3's getting hung up and causing the search unit to spin endlessly. Other times making the same selections they will work fine.
A2, L2, N2, B3, L3, N3 and R3 are slots I have records in that maybe 75 percent of the time get hung up. The other 25 percent they search and play normally.

You can remove the search unit, connect it, and watch what pin is pushed. The adjustment notch is on the inside of the pin bank. If its hitting the proper pin, then next place to look is the stop-switch.

John is correct the best way to test the search unit is to remove it and look at what pins are pushed out.
I usually start with A, C2, E3, G4 etc on the A sides and then do all the B sides if all of the pins push out correctly then as John says you need to check out the stop plate assembly.

i have an r-86 that does the same thing, it plays one off til it hits home the next time around then corrects itself. anybody know what would cause this on a opto/ computer setup?

Hello Larry,

You need to check a few things first then adjust the opto switch as per the manual adjustments.

Check the sprag wheel for any wear (I have seen the plastic gears worn through) also check that the stem bushing grommets have not rotted (it happens when someone oils the mechanism).
After these are checked and rectified. take off the opto switch and clean it with a damp cloth, also clean the gear as well. Replace the opto switch and then adjust it as per the manual.
