LS1 on free play, sometimes

I knew that my Seeburg LS1 was on free play. But very occasionally it will come out of it and then the mechanism will just randomly select records. If you put a quarter in, the lights would come back on and it would random play until the end of travel, then once it reversed, it would go to the idle position, R8. Selections will now play correctly and the select lights stay lit, until the next time it does it. Sometimes, you would have to put the quarter in two or three times before the lights came on even though you could hear the selenoid in the pricing unit. Tonight, I broke out the manual and have noticed that the subtract pawl and spring have been removed. This looks like the only thing missing. Is this a safe way of free play and if so, is there something I can do to keep it in free play. I wish it was on coin so I could just put a doorbell switch on the coin contacts but it is what it is. This has the UDPU6 pricing unit which looks to be the correct one for the machine. It's the one shown in the service manual.
Also, my buttons are not latching. You need to press both in to make a selection. It always selects correctly but only this way. Thanks again.

Greg,
You have multiple problems--contact me off list with the following answers--
Is the UDPU-6 a code A,B, or C unit ? Is the TES a code A or B unit ? Does the solenoid energize in the TES ?

Just picked up a dirt cheap, and also very very dirty, working LS-2 with an unmolested pricing unit so now I'm back on full coin and all is good. I did fuse the latch selenoid per Ron's suggestion but now it's a non issue. Got a ton of other parts that pretty much all interchange.
Although I did hear the LS-2 play, it was at low volume. It's now in storage and mostly apart. Do the horns make a big difference over the 6X9's that the LS-1 has? I would think they would.

Greg,
The whole "speaker package" is different between the two models, and IMHO, the 2 is far better sounding. Ron Rich

Thanks Ron, it seemed like it might. Maybe I'm parting the wrong one. The 2 is filthy but it can be cleaned up. We will see.

Since Ron mentioned that the LS-2 speaker system is better than the LS-1, today I took everything out of the LS-2 and cleaned it up, then installed the mech, amp and control center (which was an LS-2 one anyway) from the LS-1 into the 2 and used the good pricing unit which is what I bought the 2 for anyway. OH.........MY.........GOD. Far better sounding, you are not kidding. It's like the difference between AM and FM. More efficient, much better frequency response, and louder than ........well you know. I used the same amp on both so I know that wasn't it. If you have the choice between a 1 or a 2, IMHO the one looks a little better but the two blows it away in sound.
