Rowe Ami TI-1/1100 Freeplay issues.

Hi everyone. I've just joined this forum after getting my hands on a beautiful Rowe/Ami TI-1 from 1973. Looks and sounds great - just a new stylus needed. I've been punching in the credit switch on the service control centre to avoid putting coins in it.

However this method no longer seems to be resetting the alphanumerical keys at the top. They're just unresponsive. Any ideas or tips for settings? I'll gladly give more info if needed.

Hi Steve,
I am not familiar with the T-I series phono's --does it have the mechanical "pricing unit" in it ? If so, it should have a slow-blow fuse inside the unit--sounds as if you may have blown it ?? REPLACE, ONLY, with the type and size called for in the Service Manual, or printed next to the fuse holder (if there !). Ron Rich

Hi Ron. Thanks for the quick reply. The juke is also know as the "Deauville" if that helps. It has a box called the "Control Centre" located to the left. You have a lever with "on/off/scan" and two buttons "cancel/credit". When I had the level switched to on, I would punch "credit" and get a few freeplays. There are some bolts underneath which adjust the credits but i'm not 100% sure how they work.

Steve, since you are adding credits with the button the first thing to check is the fuse on the credit unit. It is on the board where the credit wiper goes around.

While you have the cover on the credit unit open it is a good idea to clean the traces with an eraser and rinse with rubbing alcohol.

Since these machines use an electro-mechanical search and memory there are contacts in the search unit that hold out the keyboard while the search motor is running and until the pin in the memory is punched. This is the next place to look when you have this sort of problem. The contacts can become pitted and the blades may have inadequate pressure on the points.

Beyond just getting past this problem, that machine is 43 years old. They are quite reliable -but a service manual is advisable. The amp will likely need at least some rebuilding. In the meantime,. turn on the machine and let it sit w/out playing for at least 15 minutes, check that the heatsink on the amp is not idling hot. If it is, the amp may need to have the bias adjusted or there may be a more serious problem that can lead to failure.

Do not attempt any adjustments until you have service information.
