Help identifying a 'Celebrity' blue portable gramophone

by loop » Wed Jan 24, 2007 2:31 am

Hi, I need help in identifying a very small, blue, portable gramophone. In the lid, small 78's can be stored. Beneath these there is 'Celebrity'.

The Celebrity sign is the only means of identification.

The machine measures only 13" X 9.5" X 7"

Thanks

Celebrity portables -

by aj-wilkinson » Wed Jan 24, 2007 10:43 am

I too have a Celebrity portable in blue, but have seen them in all the usual basic colours. They are quite common in the UK.
To myself, the most interesting thing is that these machines were often offered in cigarette coupon catalogues in the early 1930s. So if you smoked a lot, and saved the coupons, a Celebrity portable could be yours.
As you mention, apart from the transfer in the lid, they carry no other marks. They are compact machines with an 8"turntable and as you mention a storage place where 8" records may be bolted into the lid (using the spindle hole).

Best wishes
AJ Wilkinson

Thank you very much AJ for the quick reply. Do you know who actually manufactured them? I am surprised that you say they are quite common as I haven't been able to find a single reference to them on the internet, and have never seen one on eBay etc. Are they desirable to collectors, or too common to be of much value?

My definition of quite common - in my travels round junk shops, boot-fairs and auctions, a machine which I may see about 4-8 occasions during a year. I think I may have seen a couple of these on ebay in the last year.
Alas I do not know of whom actually made them.
I will try to find the old cigarette catalogues to see if they help.
As to value, don't expect to retire early. For the collector, they have little to make them stand out from the mass of thirties budget portables available. But if you want a simple small machine just to play a few records then they fit the bill. I would not expect a perfect one to sell for much more than about 60pounds
