Orthophonic SHF-5 Advice?

by Flap_Jack » Sat Aug 15, 2015 10:57 pm

Hi, all. I just bought a SHF-5, over all in lovely shape, but needing help. I already read the "I JUST bought" post and will certainly take its wisdom to heart. Two major stumbling blocks on my road to happiness here are: 1) All the amp produces is a hum, really loud at first, then fading to just sort of loud, and unaffected by the volume control. Is it possible that replacing the tubes and capacitors would clear this up? If not, what might it be?
2) The turntable/changer worked like a charm at point of purchase, but now I've carted the thing home (be it ever so gently), all it wants to do is drop the record, set the tone arm on it, then immediately decide it's done, set the arm back on its rest, and shut off.

I'm really looking forward to playing my wacky assortment of vintage vinyl on appropriate equipment, especially this Christmas. Any advice, gratefully received! Thanks! - Flap Jack

Doubt the tubes are at fault - they last a long time.
Capacitors in those always need replacing after 50+ years.
Changer - teardown and overhaul/relubed, including new rubber mounts, idler, etc.
It's not an easy job for untalented.

My SHF-12 - I did a complete restore/repaint/customize on it, makes a nice bedroom player - perfect to go to sleep to.

Very nice Matt. I have a similar unit, stereo with extension speaker, with the off white tonearm. I like the style of yours better
Vinyl is disease which attacks that area of the brain desiring digital recordings. Once you catch it, you are cured.

Yeah, it came out nice.
I dropped in the RP-217 style "studiomatic" changer as an upgrade.
Also custom built a PushPull 6V6 AMP, and used a 3 speaker setup - the thing kicks ass.
Satin black for the cabinet, new grille cloth, and a customer offered me the brass toned legs.

So now I have a one-of-a-kind freak consolette!
LOL!
