AMI E-80

Hello.....I have an AMi E-80 box that I bought over 20 years ago. When I got it I refinished the cabinet and cleaned up the insides and gave it a lube, oil and filter :). There was some hay inside so I think it spent some time in a barn ! Any way, Last week I rebuilt the amp. New caps and few new resistors. And of course Tubes. The box sounds great. Over the years I managed to replace all the missing parts, including adding 2 wall units and a stepper. But the one thing I don't have are title strip holders. People have sold me sets of holders saying they were for an E-80. When I get them they are always for an E-120. I need a set for my E-80. Also I was wondering if the holders from a D-80 will fit ? Last night I saw a picture of a G-80. And the holders looked like what I need. But today I saw another G-80 that had the "V" shaped holders that are used in 120 type machines. Maybe the picture title was wrong ? I'm open to suggestion.

BTW if you re-cap an amp try to keep the filter caps as close to the original values as possible. Yes you can always go a little higher, but never go lower. However today's modern caps are much better than the caps from 1953. Putting much larger caps will increase the B+. The tubes can handle it, but some resistors may not. In my case the plate voltage on the 3rd. stage is supposed to be 50 volts. After the re-capping it was 90 volts. That was causing unwanted distortion. But not for long. the plate resistor burned up in a matter of less than 2 hours. The original resistor had a value of 330k ohms @ 1/2 watt. I did not have any 1 watt 330k's. So I figured double the ohms value and put 2 in parallel. The only one close was a 860k. So the parallel value would be close to 430K @ 1 watt. The plate voltage dropped to 55, close enough and it played for over 6 hours, no problem. viggie

Viggie,
I suspect, from what you have written that the 330k 1/2 watt original resistor, had changed value on you prior to re-capping---

Hi Ron........well yes and no. The original 330k fried as soon as I powered up the amp after recapping. I replaced it. That's when the amp worked for a couple of hours and fried again. So yea the original may have changed value over the years but the 330k I put in had to be good. It was, I believe, the higher B+ from larger caps that killed it. So far the other parts of the circuit are fine. I didn't change all the resistors because the designs back in 53' were very broad to accommodate component value changes over the years. Remember back then we were not a disposable society. They built stuff to last. Plus higher wattage resistors can get pricey. I've been out of work almost 2 years now, so money is tight. However I did find a place recently that sells only Caps and Resistors at great prices called Just Radio's. They are in Canada. viggie
