Hello everyone!

I am new to the board and a proud co-owner of a 1961 Magnavox Micromatic Console my husband and I found at a yard sale for $15 dollars. Overall in great physical condition. The radio is operational. Last weekend we cleaned her up, removed dirt, grime, old grease and added new. This morning we replaced the needle. So naturally we were estatic because we thought we were going be able to play records. However, it will only turn on if it is on 78. It plays for 5 seconds and then it stops spinning altogether. I think that the component that allows you to change the speeds is faulty but I could be wrong. Anyone have any idea why my turntable is not spinning?

1) it's a tube model.
2) it's likely 50 yrs old now.
3) immediate restoration by a professional is in order.

If "3" isn't performed, then it'll fry itself to death.

The effect with the turntable is caused by dry hardened lubrication in the motor and drive assembly.

The idler wheels may also have to be replaced. The original wheels have rubber that easily rotted away. The replacement wheels I put in in 1974 are still working. They were made of much better materials. The changers in units made before 1966 have two wheels. One drives the turntable. The other drives the changer cycle.
