Hi,

I just bought a used cabinet record player/ I was super excited when I bought my first record (12"). I came home and couldn't wait to play it but for some reason it runs slow on 33rpm. Needless to say I was really bummed out!
If someone could tell me what to do to fix this or why this is happening that would be great!

Need for servicing.

Old School remedy = call up a service/repair shop.

Any idea who I would contact to get this checked out ? I'm in Toronto.

Is there something I can do to try to fix the problem ?

Try your local phone book under "Radio / TV repairs"-- or if you are near Lawrence Square, there USED to be (and may still be ?) a pro shop there--

I'll try to be of more practical help.

Your turntable looks similar to my forty year-old Philips 308.

I've lifted the turntable off and videoed the action so you can compare yours with mine. I had a few problems a few years ago, the motor had seized up through lack of use and the belt had stretched.

Yours may too be suffering from just a lack of lubrication, they rarely need ever any just a drop on a few metal moving parts, particularly the little motor's bearings. (But unplug it first).
To do this with mine, the whole bottom panel can be removed to gain access. Keep any oil away from electrical stuff and the belt.
The little jockey wheels you can see should turn freely enough and without the belt, so should the big wheel.

It may be that the belt in yours (if it is the same type) has stretched and needs replacing, it shouldn't sag at all but be as tight as mine looks. An elastic band won't work, you have to have the correct replacement.
They are obtainable, I replaced mine a few years ago, I bought two, a spare one's sitting in the tray in case I ever need it but I think the one it's using will see me out. Everything as you can see works fine now.
