Q100 won't stop scanning

by Eric H » Sun Apr 17, 2011 7:47 am

Hi all, I was referred here by members of the Antique Radio Forums.

I picked up this Q100 a few weeks ago because it was complete and quite clean, I was watching it for several months at the local Second Hand store and when the price dropped for the second time I got it.
I have an M100B and I wanted a Stereo unit as well to play newer records on.

I've cleaned all the contacts, recapped the Tormat Selector Unit chassis and the Stepper unit cleaned and lubed the mechanism, replaced a bad motor and a trip coil (that i ruined by getting wet).

At this point it will make selections, scan, pick up and play, reject and cancel the selections, however after the last selection is played it doesn't shut off, just scans back and forth
forever unless I shut it off by double clicking the red button next to the scan/off/play switch, it responds to that and shuts down.

Possibly I misadjusted one or more of the contacts on the mechanism, the Muting connector has to be unplugged to get sound out of it. I ran through the adjustments in the service manual but being the first time I tried that I may have made some errors.

I appreciate any help I can get,

Thanks!

I also have a dead channel on the Amp, I figured I'd save that problem until I get the rest of the bugs ironed out. 8)

Hi Eric,
Going from what you have written and listing to your U Tube audio, I can hear what your problem is---
Real simple--under the TMU there is a set of switches, called the Play Control Subtract Switch, that should ride a ramp on the left (looking at the rear of the record rack) and make contact . They are not doing so. You probably "bent" the whole "housing" when you removed or replaced the mechanism into the cabinet. Just bend them back and adjust them as per the Service Manual-- About 10 seconds work-- ( these switches pulse the scan control "subtract coil" in the TSU, the same as you have done with the service switch) Ron Rich

Hi Ron, I was told you were the Guru and it's true!
Thank you thank you!!

That fixed the problem, the switch was way out of adjustment.

The roller was about 3/8" from the ramp and the contacts were probably 1/8" or more apart.
Adjusted both, De-oxed the contacts and we're in business.

It scans twice past the ramp after the last selection depending on which side is playing, (I hear a click now) and then shuts off, I'm assuming that's what it's supposed to do to make sure there are no more selections?

Is this the function of the two solenoids in the TMU up near the on/off switch, the ones with the clockwork like escapement that counts to two and the trips the switch?

Now on to the Amp.

Eric,
You MAY have gotten it--to check the adjustment, do the following---
Select K-9 and K-0. If the switch is correct, the phono will play K-9, withOUT holding the switch closed ( No "click", or "Buzz"). It will then return the record to the slot, "scan" and "click" once, play K-10, and make one more complete cycle before stopping, on the left end near K-7 or so--
Yes that is the function of that unit (scan control unit).
I would avoid "DeOxIt" or any contact cleaner on that type of contact, as they all seem to leave a residue that "attracts dirt".
I explain this in my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide" which I sell, directly. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, contact me off forum at: ronnnrich@yahoo.com.

Indeed, eric, listen to the man!
hahaha.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Just tried it and it worked perfectly.
It'll probably need a couple more adjustments since I had the Magazine off the base as well as the Tormat unit while cleaning it, it stopped once past A1 and I had to nudge it to get it going again so it probably still needs some adjustments but at least it's running and basically functioning as it should, except for the Amp, I'll be looking into that soon.

Get Ron's manual Eric. You won't, repeat won't, regret it. You can use it for your B also.
