CD-Pro player issue NSM Cosmic Burst

by paragon66x » Thu Dec 11, 2014 9:09 pm

Hi - new to this forum and having an issue with a CD-Pro player VAU 1252-10. I am working on an NSM unit and when I go to initialize the CD's, sometimes they all initialize, sometimes a few don't. When I go to play them, sometimes they will not play, even though they did initialize. As the player gets warmer and is used more, things seem to play more consistently with fewer errors. Any ideas what I am up against to get this thing working better?

It is worth mentioning that I have never got any type of error code numbers on the screen when it fails to play.

Thanks - John

Hi
sometimes if a laser unit is on it's way out it will not play a disc but usually will give an error 61 especially on burnt cd's. also the cd unit can act up if it is in a cold area, also maybe clean the lens.
Regarding cd's not initialising i presume you mean that the gripper assembly doesn't pull out the particular tray, i found with a previous nsm cd machine i had the machine would not pull out certain trays between numbers 30 and 50, i was told it was to do with the tray type not sure about that one, i think there are adjustments listed in the manual and i think it also mentions cleaning the light barriers.
The solution i found was that all trays could be selected if i applied a little pressure on the cd stack, so i wedged something between the cd stack and the mbc housing, not very scientific but it worked

By initializing I am referring to the set up menu when the disks are first read to acknowledge how many tracks on the disc, total time on the disc, etc. As the discs are pulled into the machine to be read, sometimes they don't read and it simply says "no valid disk found." But again, as it gets warmer from use, things seems to improve a bit.

And yes, lens has been cleaned, didn't seem to make a difference though.

That's a "typical" sign that the player is failing--Phillips claimed that it was due to lack of "proper lubrication"--and had a very, very, VERY, expensive lube available, but IMHO, just cleaning the "rails", adding a very small dab of 20 wt motor oil to the sledge motor shaft, and removing all dried lube saves about as many as using the expensive lube-- ( If a "PRO-2", I do "other things" that seem to improve the life) Ron Rich

Well, that's kind of what I was afraid of Ron, but just wasn't totally sure because of the lack of actual error code numbers. What do you recommend for fixing? I see Enco offers the laser assembly for a reasonable price, just not sure how easy it is to install. Any advice here?

Any sources for used units or know of anyone who repairs and swaps out with your (my) core? $400+ for a brand new one is hard to swallow and the CD Adaptor (as much as I would like to try one) seems pretty high too by the time you add the hard drive in on top of that. Thoughts???

Welp, when you're playin' around with jukeboxes, ain't nothin' gonna be cheap.
It's an expensive hobby.

I quit fixing them three or four years ago, as the "new" parts were mostly junk. I'd fix them and 30 days later the part failed--

So are you saying it could be a waste of time to try and rebuild the player I have?

I hear ya Ronnie.
Knock-off replacement parts these days are crap.
I've had the same problems with repairing flat screen tv's, DVD's, and stuff.
They just don't make things these days to last, and have quality, much less style.

That's also one of the reasons I got into doing vintage restorations for people.
I can see the interest is more than just a "fad", but really the desire for something "substantial" and providing long-lasting pleasure.

Nevertheless, Ron, the CD jukes were certainly not as well-buit as the older "record" models.
While the CD format was "cute" in so many ways, it also had its flaws by design.

Ya just can't beat the good ole record players!

Enco has philips replacement products. They are original equipment replacements which you can't bet in this market.Although much more than the ones on ebay, these are spected out to preform as original design.
I have bought from ebay and gotten junk, but I also got some philips products that worked extrememly well. You will see the philips logo on the pictures if they have them.
The nlaser itself is fairly easy to replace.Just take your time and do it in steps as instructed.
Good luck with it.
