Wurlitzer X5 issues with sound and selecting

by br549autosales » Sat Mar 08, 2014 6:37 am

Hello all, I am new here and not too familiar with jukeboxes as I am with other coin op devices. I am working on a Wurlitzer X5 and even though I have the volume turned up all the way, it seems as if is not really loud enough, sounds to me more like 50% full sound. Also when I power the machine on, the record index just spins continuously and the relay beside it clicks every few seconds and it will only stop, select and play the record on @ 20 or so selections but the other selections it will not, just keeps spinning and clicking at the relay. Any ideas as to what I can try?

Thanks!

Is it possible that the sound issues could be a bad pot?

"Sound issue" can be many things, including but (IMHO,) not likely the "pot".
First thing to check is "speaker taps"----if no "external" speakers attached, cabinet speakers must be connected to the "highest" taps--

Thanks for the response, I am new to working on jukeboxes so when you say speaker taps, are you talking about the terminals on the the L and R where the yellow wires are going to the 4th top and bottom terminals on the L side in the amp picture? Do I need to measure the taps with a multimeter?

Thanks!

I don't know how speakers are configured in the German WurliTzers-- there should be some "numbering", or "lettering" to tell you where to connect them ? Service Manual, should contain this info !

Could you recommend someone that works with Wurlitzer jukes? Seems like not too many people know much about them or they just may not be one really worth fooling with.

German built models are just about unknown, locally--Read "stickies" (information), above, for a link to "repair people"

Hi
The amps in the german wurlitzers have a sliding switch for stereo and dual channel(kanal) operation. Stereo is normal operation on the machine speakers and dual channel is where one side of the amp controls the machine speakers and the other controls external speakers. Also i have seen on some of these machines whereby the regular volume control was defective and by using the wired remote the sound returned to normal. Theres also a sliding switch on the amp for normal and remote use. There are also two festron tubes which will light up or blow if the amp is overloaded, they are like large glass fuses, one may be blown, For the constant play its possible that the latch pins below the chassis are not being cancelled. and for non selection the latch pins get dirty and will not select if dirty, also the search pins need a bit of lubrication otherwise they won't strike the latch switch properly. The only real way is to remove the chassis from the machine, difficult enough job

Thanks,

I am not seeing the sliding switch for the normal and remote use. I did see the sliding switch for the stereo/mono and I have it on stereo. Both festron tubes tested fine with my meter. I have not attempted to work with the latch pins on the chassis yet until I know I can get the sound working properly. I'm beginning to think that I just have a bad amp even though this one was supposed to be a tested working one when I bought it.

Guy'z,
Somewhere in the lower reaches of my memory, I recall seeing that switch in two forms--on the rear/outside of the cabinet, near the volume control pot(s) ? One memory is of a rather large white colored, "toggle type", switch, and the other one is a small "sliding type"---Don't have a clue as to which one, was used on which model ??
