New to this forum

Hello everyone,

I am new here and would like to introduce myself.
I've been interested in Edison cylinder phonographs and records nearly all of my life, having gotten my first machine given to me by my grandfather when I was 11 years old.

Still have that machine. It's a Standard model D combination type that has the 2/4 change gearing. I have model C and H reproducers for it, plus a weird hybrid reproducer rebuilt from a defunct model H top.

This oddball rebuilt reproducer was put together using
a ball stylus and a Model C weight. It is used for
testing of brown wax blanks.

I also currently have (5) recorders for this machine
which I have rebuilt, plus a recently purchased automatic
recorder.

One of my long-term projects has been learning how
to make brown wax recording blanks from scratch.
That project started in 1978, and is ongoing.

Since 2009, I've been making these blanks, and so
far have cast 211 of them. Recently started putting
them up for sale to the public, and that has gone
extremely well! I invested in having some boxes made
for them, and have taken the time to make a proper
label.

To see more about me and what I do, please have a look
at my website:

http://www.richardslaboratories.com

There are several videos linked there. The best one
that shows what I do is the one titled "finishing operations". It runs about 11 minutes so if
you want to get to the meat of it skip to the last
few minutes when it shows the (5) recording tests
put on to a brand new blank and played back.

I hope you enjoy watching this.

Currently I am all sold out of my blanks that I brought
to Florida this winter. I will be back in Illinois by June, 2013. The whole stock of blanks (some 150 of them)
is there now, so I can start filling orders at that time.

Hi Chuck:

Welcome to phonoland. As you've probably noted, the acoustic gramophones and phonographs board is kind of slow at this time, so we welcome any contributions you might want to make. Also, feel free to post any photos or jumps to (Youtube) videos of your machines, records, etc.

Hello Chuck,

A warm welcome from me also.
Joe_DS needs someone to speak to that knows what he is talking about; Ron and myself get lost if the record player doesn't have wires on it.

Alan

I wholeheartedly agree that electric motor powered
phonographs are the best ones.

An Edison class M electric cylinder phonograph
from about 1890, being powered by single Grenet wet
cell would be by far the best way to test brown wax
blanks as they come off of the production line.

However, seeing as how I do not just so happen to
have around $30,000 just floating around as pocket
change to use to purchase one, I must suffer through
using my old well-worn Standard D combination machine
that is powered by a spring.
