You might take a look at Eastwood's site(eastwood.com). They have a lot of products for restoring automotive underhood finishes. Duplicolor has some interesting paints as well for automotive restoration. It may take a combination of techniques to get the finish you're looking for. Maybe a light gray base coat with a dusting of chrome in a can? It's something I need to experiment with as well.
Good luck! I have a trashcan, too, that's undergoing a slow restoration. I suspect I will leave the chassis and reproducer as is. The effort required to paint the amp and selection receiver would be huge. I'd much rather put the work into the outside and have it look super spiffy.
