R-84 CCC Alternate board Assembly?!?!

by Andy J » Mon Jun 07, 2010 5:17 am

Hello All... I have a question for anybody that can help.... As you may know, I plan to get the improved CCC chip for my R-84... I bid on one on Ebay, and it's looking like I'm going to win it... Here's the question...I have the 60887002 CCC, with a 60887101 board. I unfortunately didn't pay attention and realize that , for some reason, instead of having the chip to be replaced at the Z115 location, it is socketed, with a ribbon cable plugged into it. The ribbon cable goes to another small board bolted inside the plastic CCC cover. It says R65000??(the last part is smudged) Alternate Bd Ass'y, and the P.N. 60898801. Can anyone tell me what exactly this is, and what it does? I did send CD Adapter.com a message explaining what I have, but just to see if their chip will still work or not....
MANY Thanks!
Andy

Hi Andy,

The board fitted to the plastic cover was a board produced by Rowe Ami (or for Rowe Ami) when there was a problem at the plant (factory) that produced the custom chip for Motorola.
This board just replaced the custom chip.
Because the add on board is fitted with a ribbon cable and plug, the socket on the CCC may need replacing due to the plug having oversized connection pins. More than likely a new custom chip would be loose in the socket unless it was replaced.

I have just looked at the www.cdadapter.com website the kit they supply seems to include a new ic socket. They say that it will do all the R-84 through to R-88 boards. Rowe Ami had two types of custom chips 7-00390-01 and 700390-03 that worked with a 2 mhz crystal and the other custom chip number 7-00390-04 that worked with a 3.579 mhz crystal.

It would be interesting how cdadapter have addressed this or it may be that their new chip only works with one type of board.

Alan,
He has two different versions of that board to take care of that--I believe the part number on the Rowe board is different--

Hi Ron,

Yes the board numbers are 6-08872-01 (earlier board) and 6008872-02 for the later board with the 3.579 Mhz crystal.
It is a good job that this company is supplying a fix there were only around 20 to 30 of the original chips still available.
I still have some and there is someone in the USA.

Regards
Alan

CD Adapter.com CCC Chip Replacement update...

by Andy J » Wed Jun 16, 2010 10:38 pm

Hello, all.....
I received the replacement chip a couple days ago.... It's GREAT! It solved aALL the nuisance problems I was having, which I described in earlier posts.... I highly recommend it. I especially like the fact you can remove the battery from the board.....The diagnostics are a great addition. For $30 ,I think it's worth it, even if you aren't having any problems. It only took about 30 minutes to install,
