Unusual record that I found - 78RPM Prom Records

by scratchdesk » Fri Jul 08, 2011 4:41 am

Hi all, I'm new here but I was reading through a bunch of posts on the boards and it seemed like you all are pretty helpful!

I came across a record that I thought was a bit unusual. Here are the details:

PROM - 78 RPM
601W-A :
Blue Suede Shoes - (Perkins)
Yes, I Know Why - (J. Green)

601W-B :
These Hands - (Noack)
Seasons of My Heart - (Edwards-Jones)

After looking all over the internet I can't really find much info on Prom and no info on this particular disc. Just wondering if I've come across a hidden gem or not.

Many thanks!

Prom Records, owned by SPC, and introduced in 1951, according to Billboard Magazine. With an original selling price of 49-cents, it was one of many budget labels of the late 1940s through the 1960s.

I know that Prom used house musicians and singers for their recording sessions, but I don't know if they were like the "sound alike" labels, such as Hit Records, that virtually copied the major hits note by note; and whose vocalists did some pretty convincing imitations of famous singers.

I don't know if they hold any special value among collectors; probably would be of most interest to those who collect budget labels.
