Edison recording blanks.

by shane » Sun Apr 22, 2007 4:42 am

Does anyone know where I might be able to buy some Edison 2 min cylinder recording blanks? I was given an email address that appeared in the M.A.P.S. magazine for a guy named Paul Morris in the U.K., who is supposed to be making new one's, but the address seems to have been printed wrong, as my emails are returned saying the address doesn't exist.
Any leads would be appreciated.

Well- I thought it worked, but this address doesn't seem to work either. I might just have to phone him or write via snail mail. Thanks for the link though Joe.

I have some Edison Dictaphone blanks, but I'm sure they are different.
I also have a partial {not complete} dictaphone---cheap.

Thanks for the offer Hal, but I have plenty dictaphone cylinders already. They are different to normal cylinders, but mainly because they are longer.

Shane, I must admit I know very little about the cylinders [I have an Amberola and about 50 records] Was there not a system of shaving off and re-recording? Hal

There was Hal. The earlier models-banner transfer Edison A's- had a large screw at the rear of the reproducer carry arm, to which a shaving devise was attached. They did away with them by the time the Model B's were released, because the smaller models didn't have the spring power to shave the cylinders properly. There was also a seperate hand cranked(no spring) shaving machine available.

I used to make cylinders for collectors, on an order basis, however I only sell what I make, now. I started producing blanks in 2000, and have sold about 7,0000 recordings and blanks since then, however the worst part is, eveyone seems to order at the same time, and then there is no orders at all at other times of years. So I make the blanks, when I have time, and sell what I make. These are made with the Aylsworth formula used for making Edison blanks from 1889-1906 (home recordig blanks were BW long after moulded records were introduced).

That's good to know. Next time when you make a batch of blanks, I'd be interested in buying about half a dozen- you'd have to ship them to Australia though. Either send me a personal message through the board here, or email me at gramophoneshane@bigpond.com I'd really appreciate it.

I have a Edison phonograph and recorder. However, Blanks are so hard to find. APSCO in New York used to make them, but I dont think they do anymore. Blanks are nice, and fun to record.

I have to agree! They are a lot of fun. I've been buying old blanks with recordings on them, and shaving any that were moldy or poor recordings. I've got a few 4 minute blanks, one of which I shaved, but unfortunately they don't record very well with a 2 min recorder because they are harder than the 2 min blanks.
It took me awhile to get really good loud recordings, but now I've got the hang of it, I want to make a lot more. I recorded a couple modern tunes onto wax, like "your disco needs you" by Kylie Minogue, and a rather rude song by Eminem, and they have great "shock" value when I demonstrate my phonographs to friends. The last thing anyone expects is modern dance music or fowl language come from the horn of 100 yr old phonograph.
I'd love to find a 4 minute recorder someday, so I can use my 4 min blanks, and record a whole song, rather than an edited version. If I can get a few new 2 min blanks, I want to try dubbing some original records from one machine to another via a rubber tub. If it works well, I can play the recordings of my favorite songs, without wearing out the originals.

Hi folks-Paul Morris here! Sorry that there has been some confusion. I have not been too active on the phonograph online scene (far too busy making wax cylinder blanks-regular and concert size, also in the middle of a mammouth restoration project) I have just got a new website-paulmorrismusic.co.uk and will be publishing all sorts of info about my wax making activities and alot of other aspects of my musical world. Please visit soon!

Kind regards to all,

Paul Morris
