Dual 1019 stacker spindle

Is anyone savvy to the kind of rubber used in the stopper of the Dual 1019 stacker spindle? I experimented with three 2x2x6 machine keys, which fit perfectly, and which I had hoped would end the temporary nature of the rubber. But they evidently didn't yield enough--on the first trial run, one of them popped out, and superglue be damned. Is there a particular kind of rubber out there best suited for this, and where might I find it?

Thanks much
Duane

Use contact cement, not super glue. Super glue doesn't work on porous materials like rubber.

I used some vinyl from a worn-out waterproof boot (footwear) I cut up, trimming it to size with an Exacto knife.

I have had very bad experience with rubber parts on Dual record changers. They rot away.

Yeah the rubber part is a pain in the butt, I admit. I'd rather replace them with something longer lasting, but not sure if that will work.

I used rubber from a turntable belt, it takes 3 pcs glued together to get the right thickness and if your careful you can glue these on without taking the spindle apart. I used tweezers and superglue(believe it or not) and it works perfectly. Mark :D

Imagehere is a picture of one of the spindles that I rebuilt. Mark P.S. I am pushing up on the bottom of the spindle to make the pads stick out so that you can see them.

Many thanks to member markl! I copied your solution and my spindle worked great on the first try. I will probably fabricate another set and be more precise with the size and fit, but this first batch is working fine. Thanks again!

I also had a non working Dual 1009 spindle. For my try I ended up using a rubber Jar Ring for canning. Those are a bit hard to come by anymore, but ebay or antique malls may have them. Perhaps even some odd stores still stock them.

The rubber is a good body for holding up the records. I took a straight razor and cut it into three little pieces to fit the pads then I sliced it a bit thiner by turning it sideways so that it was the right thickness to fit within the spindle. I used "Tacky Glue" for my final try. I took a tooth pick and rubbed a thin coat on the rubber then with a tweezers I put them in place. I let it dry for two hours, and its working great so far. I don't know if that tacky glue will hold up to use, but I will find out. If not the same pads would work another glue. I used the tacky glue because I had it here, and it has proven pretty good at hold dissimilar items together, but not under the stress these will have. Time will tell for sure.. Either way its great to have it running.

Thanks for the original poster it got me wondering if I couldn't fix mine..

This is great information, I have been looking for tips for this. I had to pay $40 to get mine fixed and "rebuilt" does anyone know how to take these apart? I was able to rebuild my AS-9 for the 45's myself, but this one is a little puzzling.

HI guys,
This is a fantastic thread.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I wreck old video players to get the motors inside. I also happen to keep all the drive belts.

I check and found a perfectly square 2mm x 2mm drive belt. I cut it into the 6mm strips as stated here, some super glue and its working perfectly in minutes.

Keep those old vide belts, i think its from the motor that drives the loading and unloading of the tape mechanism.

HI All: Newbie here. I have a Dual 1225 that works fine on single play but won't shut off after last record with the auto spindle. I have the manual and it says "replace the spindle". I have two, one of which was working fine last year but suddenly quit. It appears that the only thing it does is push down on the cam follower. Can it push too far as it ages? Surely there is a way of fixing these. Any help out there?
I have also replaced the "Sterupimple" (sp) twice using a piece of inner ball point pen tube. The arm lifts, swings and drops ok so I don't think there is any problem except the spindle.

Since it seems you're a DIY guy, have you invested the time to clean and re-lubricate this changer?

Haven't dismantled it all but have removed the springs and piston that moves the spindle and all was clean and lightly lubed. looked it all over underneath and cleande and relubed everything I can see. Replaced the "sterempule" or "white guide" to correct tone arm swing. After all that and a used spindle purchased from a devotee it worked perfectly on auto play last winter over Christmas many records worth, but after sitting for a year it no longer works on autoplay. Everything else seems to work perfectly. The magic is in the spindle and I want to know what it is. The quest is on.

I Just fixed my 1019 stacker using the rubber from around the base of an old Garrard turntable, works great even with 78's stacked on it. I replaced sterempule with a rubber Voice Of Music 10" record dot. If i could post a pic i would, you may need to check the underside of your tt and look at the cam,and see if it is working right

Unless you're familiar with the Dual changer mechanism and its critical assemblies, get it serviced by a pro.
These things are known for age-related dried-up lubrication - in areas a novice/tinkerer cannot see.
I've done enough of them to know.

On that dual 1225, watch the projection on the dropping rocker arm as the switch lever on the cam passes it. When there is a record on the spindle, the projection hits the switch lever and changes it to set the arm down on the record. If there is no record, the projection misses the switch lever, causing automatic shutoff.

There are several things that can go wrong here:

1. The spindle is not locking downward motion if no record is on it. This is inside the spindle. You can tell that it is happening, because the lower prongs retract completely into the spindle with no record if the spindle is defective. They will not retract if the spindle is working properly and no record is on the spindle.

Sometimes this is due to the tiny ball bearing inside the spindle being either stuck due to gummed dirt or lube inside the spindle, or entirely missing. Never lubricate this kind of spindle.

2. The projection is bent, so it always hits the switch lever.

3. The pickup arm raising lever is misadjusted, so the cam follower does not return the switch lever to the shutoff position at the end of the change cycle.

4. The start-stop control is hanging up on the start side. It hits the switch lever when the change cycle starts.

5. If you turn the control to start while the last record is playing, it will return the arm to the same record. The is normal operation. Use stop to return the arm to rest.

6. The spindle rocker arm is misadjusted, so the spindle is not fully returned to its initial position after the cycle ends. This keeps the spindle from locking if there is no record on it.

7. The switch lever on the cam is bent.

Note that if the arm returns to rest, but the turntable continues to turn, the problem is in the adjustment of the interface between tonearm position and the power switch linkage. The spindle has nothing to do with it.

What is the "Sterupimple"?
