SHP3 - Troubleshooting - NO SOUND

by Javajesus » Thu Mar 25, 2010 4:58 am

Ok, here is some background. I re-capped my SHP3 amp and replaced the driver and power transistors. I had put 2 of the power transistors in upside down (don't ask) and fried them. I replaced all 4 power transistors and now, the amp produces no sound. I ran the driver continuity tests in Tony's amp manual (pg 39) and here are the results....

A) C65 + terminal and Q17 collector = FAIL
B) C65 + terminal and Q27 collector = FAIL
C) C65 + terminal and Q15 collector = FAIL
D) C65 + terminal and Q25 collector = FAIL
E) C66 - terminal and Q18 emitter = FAIL
F) C66 - terminal and Q28 emitter = FAIL
G) C66 - terminal and Q16 emitter = FAIL
H) C66 - terminal and Q26 emitter = FAIL
I) C44 + terminal and Q17 emitter and Q18 collector = PASS
J) C44 + terminal and Q27 emitter and Q28 collector = PASS
K) Q15 emitter and Q17 base = PASS
L) Q16 collector and Q18 base = PASS
M) Q25 emitter and Q27 base = PASS
N) Q26 collector and Q28 base = PASS

Can someone help me decipher this? All it says in the manual is "If amplifier does not pass any of the above continuity checks, fix it before proceeding"

My copy of the amp book has "taken a hike", but I think I remember something about the two filter caps being "reversed" in something in that book--check the schematics for C-65/66 Ron Rich

Thanks Ron,

I will take a look at that when i get to work. I was wondering if I got the polarity correct when I put them in.

I did some new test with corrections from Ron, here are my new results. Can anyone help me pin point what the problem is? As you can see (A) is still a FAIL.

A) C65 + terminal and Q17 collector = FAIL
B) C65 + terminal and Q27 collector = PASS
C) C65 + terminal and Q15 collector = PASS
D) C65 + terminal and Q25 collector = PASS
E) C66 - terminal and Q18 emitter = PASS
F) C66 - terminal and Q28 emitter = PASS
G) C66 - terminal and Q16 COLLECTOR = PASS
H) C66 - terminal and Q26COLLECTOR = PASS
I) C44 + terminal and Q17 emitter and Q18 collector = PASS
J) C44 + terminal and Q27 emitter and Q28 collector = PASS
K) Q15 emitter and Q17 base = PASS
L) Q16 collector and Q18 base = PASS
M) Q25 emitter and Q27 base = PASS
N) Q26 collector and Q28 base = PASS

Well,
If you have a failure between point A and B--what could that be ? Either it does NOT belong there--or it does belong there, and a wire/trace/plug is open --

I narrowed the problem down to R5177, the wire wound .2ohm 5watt. Any recommendations for sourcing this? Mouser part number?
