Technical Help - Magnavox 1CP606

I just purchased a Magnavox 1CP606 from an antique store. Its in great condition and seems that everything is working, except for an issue with the sound.

When playing, you can tell the speakers have sound, but when the needle is on the record, the sound has static and the sound itself is very faint, even when turning it up or adjusting balance or speakers. It also seems that it is continuously playing the same line. Any ideas on what might be going on?

Are you sure the model number isn't 1ST606?

Yes, thats the correct model.

Here are photos:

Make sure the needle is centered in the rubber "V" yoke of the cartridge.
Being delicate and flexible, it's easy to dis-lodge or damage.
Also make sure there's no dust build-up in the yoke area - a small soft brush helps.
If all is good there, the problem could be a defective cartridge, OR a problem with the amplifier.
That model is transistorized, and if in need of service, will cost you a hefty bit to have repaired properly.
Age takes its toll on things that are decades old.
Also people are known to be rough with things.

Other than that, unless the unit is in my shop, I can't diagnose any further online.

Indeed, Ron, there could be a myriad of issues to deal with.
It's really impossible even for us seasoned techs to diagnose and troubleshoot problems like this online.

Best thing to do is take it to a shop.

Ron, you crack me up.

If people knew the complexity of consumer electronics, they'd realize there's simply no "one button" gonna happen.
I don't believe in "quick fixes" or stuff like that.
There's always a reason why something failed, sure, but getting to the root of the problem is not easily diagnosed over the internet.
If I could see it in front of me, touch it, and watch it perform, hear it..... sure, I'd spot the problem right quick. - I'm a professional, after all, with decades of experience.
I guess I'm not one to go back and forth over the internet, guessing.
It's just too frustrating.

Is this a "phono only" unit? I can't see a radio/receiver chassis in the pics. It looks like one of those units from the 60's brochures where you could remove the legs and mount it on a deep shelf or countertop.

Yes, one would have to be right there in person to see the issues. If it has a radio and aux inputs, I would check those out also. If the static is accross the board, then there are deeper issues than the turntable/cartridge. Take it to a qualified and/or educated person who knows how to handle such a situation.--BB

This is what I found from an old brittle 1966 brochure...
It seems like the phono-only models boasted 20-watts music power, while the phono-radio models have 15-watts music power. Phono-only were $149.50, with Stereo FM/AM were $198.50. There also seems to be some transition into the newer W620 series changers because there is no mention of the older ones with the black curved tonearm. --BB
