Hello from a Newbie

by g0pkh » Wed Oct 05, 2011 2:41 pm

Hi

I have been reading this great forum for a while now.
Name is Pete, I live in the UK

I have just restored to full working operation my first Jukebox. A Rockola 474 Sybaris
I was fortunate enough to have been given it at the best possible price (free :D )

It was a real basket case however. But after nearly a year, I have finally fully completed the restoration, It is working beautifully now.

I am a real stranger to Jukes, but no stranger to electromechanical or electronics, I trained for many years in electronics.

I have a couple of questions however.

There is one last thing I need to do to the Juke to complete it, and that is to fit the popularity wheel back on,
however there seems to be no mention of how best to re-align this in the service manual. In fact there is no mention of it all.
has anyone any tips on how to do this ?

Also my machine unfortunately was missing its special tapped volume control (both on the amp and also the remote unit).

Inside the amp is a small PCB containing 2 electronic attenuator chips, these are controlled (by a DC voltage) via a dual gang pot mounted in a small remote box (which I have assembled) this box also contains a free credit button linked to the electronic credit system (not the coin switch) and also the cancel button.

Does anyone know where I might obtain the correct remote unit for this machine. I have tried all the usual Juke spares suppliers in the UK.

Many thanks folks, great forum.

Oh before i go, I remember reading a post by Ron Rich regarding a 474 he had problems with (the symptom, chattering of the play relay followed by the CB popping out, only while playing B sides). Did you fix it Ron ? and if so I am intrigued to know what the fault was.

Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete,
Welcome and congrats !
Check with www.verntisdale.com--he MAY have an new replacement for the VC pot--If not, see the "announcements" section above for places to look in the US.
On the 474 with problems---No, the owner of the phono did not want to spend any money on it.

Hi Ron

Thanks for the welcome, and congrats.

I can tell you, it was a great feeling to get this old box running again. Even better to come home from work yesterday and see the wife selecting some music,
makes it all worth while. :)

Thanks for the heads up with the VC pot, I will check out those suppliers.

Any thoughts on the POP wheel ?

I guess I will have to let the machine start a cycle, let it get just to the point where the wheel gets operated, stop the mech with the service switch, and take it from there.

Pity about that 474 fault you encounted , I'd love to know what caused it. I am fascinated by faults on these even to the point where I really enjoy fixing them.
I am sure I wouldn't be so enthusiastic doing it for a living however.

regards

Pete

Pete,
No--sorry, I do not re-call how the pop wheel operates on that model-- sounds as if your plan should work ?

Hi Pete,

Welcome to the forum.
Did you check out Leon Readers site www.jukeboxparts.co.uk ?
Years since I worked on any other jukebox other than Rowe Ami. One of our other members (doghouseriley) has a Rock Ola jukebox 442 or 443 and he is also in the UK it may be prudent to contact him.

Hi Alan

Thanks for the welcome.

Leon at jukeboxparts.co.uk helped with loads of parts for the jukebox actually.
Without his help I certainly wouldn't have the box running now :)

I have seen a guy on ebay actually offering what look like pattern pots for these, but very expensive.

It works fine as it is, however I guess the bass response at lower volume levels is not as good as it might be.

Will just have to crank it up a bit more that's all.

Sorry neighbours :)

I have a real problem now of course.
That is that I want to do another machine now

Cheers

Pete

Hello Pete,

If you contact me off of line I do have one of the Rock Ola remote controls complete and one missing the back of the box and missing the knob.

Alan
