RCA/Victor VFT-65W with sound only coming out one side

by PictureGuy » Sun Mar 24, 2013 2:51 am

Hello folks,

I've been browsing/attempting to educate myself before asking anything here, but I've finally become so frustrated that I just have to ask for a helping hand.

I've inherited a nice RCA Victor VFT65W console from my grandmother. I know it hasn't been used regularly for years. Anyway, it powers up no problem and everything appears in decent working order(to a point). The big issue is I'm only getting sound out of one side of the speakers. When I disconnect and switch the speaker wires to the opposite sides, the problem migrates to the opposite side, so it's obvious that the signal isn't coming through on one pair of wires.

I've noticed the "source" selector switch/knob is pretty difficult to operate, but I'm assuming it has little to do with that. The issue persists regardless of the turn table or radio being used.

I'm capable of testing components/soldering in replacements, but I really don't know where to start. If anyone has any ideas what might be the issue, or if you would like additional information/some pictures, I'm more than happy to oblige.

I've done enough of them to know....
If the expensive germanium output transistors arn't fried by now, every stinkin' electolytic in that set has to be replaced.
Every one!
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Hmm, sounds like it might be more fun than I was looking to get into... Now to hunt down a good repair guy in Los Angeles, I'm sure there's got to be one around.
