Garrard set down point adjustment

Hello all.

I'm restoring three KLH model 24 phonographs with four speed Garrard changers. The changers are KLH branded on top but two of the chassis are marked 701A and 840B. I've done Garrards before so all the usual cleaning and lube has been done and they all work correctly but for one thing. It will only set down at the 12 inch point. If I set it to 78 or 45 the speeds work correctly, but the tonearm still sets down at the 33 set down point. Any suggestions?

Does the record-size "feeler" arm move freely..springs tensioned properly? You should hear a "click" for each size (10"/12") as it's pushed rearword manually during the size selection part of the cycle.. this happens right as the spindle record pusher is fully extended.
And the associated linkage that it operates underneath, is it cleaned/lubed?
Also, the "stepped" tonearm limit assembly, is it also free to move?

The best way to check these things is by cycling the platter by hand, slowly, and watching underneath as each part operates.

You must put the record on the changer spindle and the overarm on the record to get the correct size. The feeler senses the size of the record AS IT DROPS DOWN THE SPINDLE. These changers have no automatic single play function with the record already down on the turntable.

If the overarm is raised and is over the rest post, the changer will index for 12", because the overarm moves the feeler out of the way so you can remove the records.

The speed control has no control over the record size on the Garrard changers made before 1969, and on none of the KLH models. On the cheezy-cheapo ones made after 1969, there was no size feeler, and the speed control set the size. So you couldn't play that 12" disco single 45.

A note on various record changers:

If the changer can take intermixed sizes, it probably can NOT index the size of a single record already on the turntable. Exceptions are Dual 1003, 1004, 1005, 1006, 1008, 1011, and 1013, most of the Philips AG series, and Miracord 16, 160, 161, and 190. The Philips and Miracord units have a special control for the single play size. The Dual changers listed could figure out both by themselves. Also, the Glaser-Steers GS 3000 and 4000 changers would index a single record if you placed the tip of the overarm over the rim of the record.
