Rock-Ola 1422 Broken Tray Tab

by ZeeSSMan1978 » Thu Oct 29, 2015 1:49 am

One of the tabs on my record trays broke rendering selection 11 useless. It is driving me nuts. l landed the eplacement tray with a good tab and now I have to replace it. The service manuals have great pictures, but they really dont get into tray replacement. It appears that the first thing you have to do is remove the whole tray deck and then remove the trays one by one until you get to your busted tray.

My question to anyone that knows this machine is how involved is this job , any tips on doing this? It doesnt look overly complex, but I am concerned about adjustments being knocked out whack and other gotchas that will hurt my machine. Thanks in advance for the help and ideas.

Chris

I would replace the entire record stack as a unit.

I have not. I have all the Manuals, but haven't gotten into taking apart the tray deck. It looks pretty involved. I was looking for pointers on it as I have the replacement tray.

Have you done this before? I have a replacement tray(tray 12). The "repair expert" who was trying to "fix" it was trying to do it with the stack still in unit. That clearly doesn't work and he doesn't do my repairs anymore.

So, I guess where do you start with taking out the stack. I cannot find any type of exploded parts view in my service manual or my other book on the 1422. Feel dead in the water.

I actually think I can repair it with the stack in place and without removing the tray. If I can figure out how to upload pics on here I will post my results.

You have to pull the mechanism to remove the record stack, The shaft will hit the top of the cabinet before it comes all the way out. Then you have the comb on the back and 3 bolts on the bottom. Once out, you will see that the record holders have spacers that they are pressed into and are very difficult to remove and replace without damage. Then after you replace the broken tray, you have to get it all lined back up, pressed back together and get shaft aligned. I would pull the mechanism far enough forward to clear and loosen the two screws that lock the shaft underneath the base. Pull the shaft and take the three bolts out and pull the whole record stack. You can find these stacks for not a great amount of money. Great time to repaint the top plate and polish everything. I make reproduction backgrounds if you want to do that while you have mechanism out or pulled forward.
