Wurlitzer 2800 picking up wrong record

by Mark H » Sat Dec 21, 2013 10:43 pm

Hello everyone,

I am still working on the Wurlitzer 2800. Jukebox is working now and has incredible sound. The blowing fuses issue has been solved thanks to Ron's advise. I am now having another issue...On certain selections, the mech is picking up the wrong record. The right selection pin is popping up on the selector, but the wrong selection arm is engaging, it is 180 degrees off. For example, if I were to select N8, the N8 pin would pop up on the selector and the carousel would rotate, but then record in the C7 spot would be installed instead on N8. N8 would be on the opposite side of the carousel. This only happens with certain selections, but it is repetitive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mark,
Glad you got it--but please post what you found --??
That problem is usually related to the "back-stop pawls". One, or the other, is "sticky". If some "Geppetto" has not moved, nor oiled it, the outline of the adjustment is factory set, and painted on the base assembly. If that's still "Un-adjusted" ALL, that need to be done is "blow out" ( with compressed air) the back stops. If oily, I have been able to use some non-residue, plastic safe-safety solvent ( PROTECT THE RECORDS above from ANY spray) to clean them. If the "painting" has been disturbed, you MUST proceed as per the Service Manual, after cleaning them.--Attempting to get them back, on exactly as they were, has never been successful for me-- :(

Checked the back stop pawls. They are clean, free, dry and appear to still be factory set. Strange how this only happens on certain selections and it is always the same lift arm / Well, I will spend monday morning checking into it further and see if I find anything.

Thanks

Mark, when this sort of thing happens look for a misalignment of the memory and crank assembly.

Loosen the screws that hold the memory to the main casting. those are the two allen screws near the front of it and the two at the top of the trapezoidal piece at the rear.

Then look for the alignment drift pin clipped to the right wall of the machine. It is approx 3" long with a C-clip.

This gets inserted in the center bottom shaft of the pin memory unit and serves to center it as you then tighten the aforementioned screws to hold it in place. Remove when done.

It will sometimes be necessary to use a little finesse to slightly overcompensate against the desire for the memory if it wants to drift back out of alignment. A Phillips screwdriver can be used if the drift pin is missing, however it should fit snugly for best results.

To add to what Rob wrote--if that ES is not lined up correctly, and needs "finesse", I find a #2 Phillips screwdriver with a good strong handle on it, works better, then the supplied pin. When correctly aligned, the screwdriver (or pin) should "fall out" when the ES bolts are tight. Ron Rich
