From Freeplay to Coin operated Wurlitzer 2000

by NickDB » Wed Jan 07, 2015 11:00 am

Hi,

We recently bought a restored Wurlitzer 2000, which is set to freeplay.
The vendor told us that this is because of possible coin problems, and for them it would be impossible
to solve that problem with all their customers all over the Netherlands and Belgium.

I have been reading up on this (official Wurlitzer 2000 manual) and decided to try and give it a go.
So I was wondering if you guys could tell me how my system is set to freeplay.

I've read here that it can be done by flipping the spring, which one would that be ?
On another forum I've been told that on my system there is a plug in one of the holes of the black gear wheel, which makes it set to freeplay.
Is this just a block to stop the wheel from turning or is this something I should not remove, just to not destroy my playing system ?

Also, I only have one slug rejector system, the half dollar rejector is plugged in.
The 5-10-25c is missing, does this pose a problem if I just want it to work on half dollar coins, do I need both rejectors ?
And on the info sheets of the Wurlitzer manual there is a cable running from the coin register mechanism to the slug rejector (5 pins connector).
(seen in photo 1 in upper right corner and photo 5 in the middle).

That cable is also missing, does this need to be plugged in, in order for it to work on coins ?

Quite a lot of questions I know, but I hope to learn a thing or two here.
I've added photos below of my system so feel free to add text, arrows or anything to help clarify things.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to your responses !

Hi Nick,
As you have a "Playrac" (WurliTzers name) pricing unit, it is very simple to change it from coins, to free play, and back--
On photo 3, see the large spring attached to the wheel (gear teeth) ? Just un-hook it, and re-hook it, after passing around the other side of that hub ( spring then "pulls" the wheel in the other direction). As for coin gear, you have the NDQ rejector there, not the "half-dollar" type. I can't see if that jukebox was equipped with an optional (I think?), HD unit, or not, from the photo angle--it appears not to have been. You can test this by inserting a coin the size of a US quarter, --if the coin enters the slug rejector, the phono was not equipped with a HD unit.
Yes--You will need to construct the cable that goes between the slug rejector, and a plug (somewhere ?) marked "coin(s?).

Hi, thanks for your input !

The slug rejector has 50cent labelled on it, but I'm no expert in recognizing either one of them, I'm just starting my jukebox learning process.
I'll open the jukebox again tomorrow and take some extra photo's. What should I look for in telling them apart, besides testing it with coins ?
Are there any labels or markings that I can look for ?

I still need to figure out where the cable needs to be attached to at the coin mechanism.
Judging from the manual that I have it would seem all cables are present at the coin mechanism, but the one that
should go to the plug disappears somewhere behind the bottom panel in the lower part of the jukebox.

In any case it seems I have some searching to do for gear... not so easy methinks.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated !

Nick,
If you have half dollar ability, you will have two "slug rejectors" that fit into the frame-
I can't recall on that model, but there should be an un-used plug on a "junction box" marked "coin", or "coin Sw"--
Cable goes from that to the male plug on the slug rejector holder. Ron Rich
