Need help with a Wurlitzer 1015 78rpm

by geeia » Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:00 pm

I have a Wurlitzer 1015 that is in general working condition. My problem is that when I make the record selection, the record is moved to the tone arm but it skips as the record plays. It is not the record since it happens to all the records. Does anyone know of an adjustment that will prevent this from happening. Thanks.

Bob,
There are about a thousand things that could cause that--depending on what you mean by "it skips". If it was playing well, and just started this behaviour, and you have "done nothing" including oiling it, in the last 6 months or so, I would suspect it's the result of a lack of oil ( somewhere). See if you can narrow it down a-bit, and if you can oil it to see if that changes things--

A thousand things, indeed....

Could be a defective needle...
Binding tonearm pivots...
Lord only knows.

Service Time!
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

There are alot of things that cause tracking problems on a simplex mech. One time I had the same problem with tracking. The tonearm wire had come loose from the wire hold down located on the rear center of the tonearm housing/support. Another Wurlitzer recently did the same thing and I found the tonearm wire was stiff from age. I replaced it with new flexable wire and it's been working fine since.
The tonearm should pivot freely/smoothly. If not I'd first check the wire, and if OK I'd next check the bearings in the tonearm housing. If it does pivot smoothly, other causes can be an incorrectly adjustment or operaton of the tonearm feed in lever, or as others have mentioned, lack of oil or a badly worn stylus.

Thanks for all the input. Hopefully I can narrow down the thousands of things to a handful. You all have given me things to look for.
