ANY VALUE IN 78 HEBREW RECORDINGS?

by ELLIOT RUBIN » Sun Jan 20, 2008 6:01 pm

I just found my grandmothers old 78's. There are a lot of Hebrew and Yiddish recodings.
Where can I find the value of these. I hav to sit down and list them but I am curious if there is any value to them?
thanks

Hi Elliot, Yiddish records are not very valuable but do sell for more than the common 78s. Common 78s sell around for $1.00 each while the Yiddish ones commonly are priced at $2-$3 each. I have several that are very interesting. Strangley, one of my favorite Yiddish records is Kol Nidre sung by Perry Como from the 1950s. He actually does a very nice rendition.

I know that some collectors specifically look for Hebrew as well as Yiddish recordings. There are also a few organizations as well as historical societies that track & archive these. For instance, see:

Archive preserves legacy of old Jewish recordings -- http://www.jewishaz.com/jewishnews/050422/archive.shtml

The Jewish Music Institute -- http://www.jmi.org.uk/

Libraries and Archives with Jewish Music Collections -- http://www.jmwc.org/jmwc_libraries.html

As noted, these normally sell for slightly more than the going rate for standard/popular 78s, and they do come up for sale on eBay from time to time. Along that line, you may want to do a search on eBay and if you spot any auctions for recordings similar to those you have, bookmark them and track them through completion. That, at least, will give you an idea of current (auction) prices.

Do you still have these. I'm looking for any Jewish dance records from Corrine Cochem.
