1963 Rock-Ola 404 Capri

by bishopx » Tue Jun 26, 2012 7:23 am

Hi Guys. My name is John. I live in the USA. I picked up a Rock-Ola 404 Capri for nex5. t to nothing. Actually wouldn't spin up when I brought it home. I used a blow dryer to warm the gears a tad to loosen the grease. It started working somewhat after that. It currently plays but this thing is in bad shape. This is the list of things wrong that I can determine. This all seems a bit overwhelming. I'm not sure where to start. As I am not an electronics person or electrician. I know very little about jukebox functions as well.
Any suggestions other than "Sell it."?

1. Grease is old and needs to be stripped and cleaned.
2. Amplifier takes a really long time to come up.
3. Selector isn't working that I can tell. Coils? How do I check?
4. Speakers are not only blown but torn to hell.
5. Coin Mechanics do not work. Needs cleaning.
6. Cracked vacuum formed plastic on the inside.
7. The speaker grill is kicked and dented, etc.

Hi John,
Welcome---can you envision a "money pit"---
As I suggest to all "newbie's", set the phono aside--do NOTHING to it, until after having purchased a "Service Manual Package", from one of the listed "ligit" sellers (see "announcements" above) . Then READ the material. If you do not have mechanical, and electrical skills, and do not have a "friend" that does, you may find it beyond your ability to get this phono up, and running correctly. I would further advise, that you not plug it in prior to changing "all caps" in the units--as old caps tend to cause "mucho problem$$$"--
Once that's done, analyze where you are at, and get back to us, if you need help---

Is there, by chance, a "cap kit" list of for each component or should I just take each component individually and create my own lists? Just wondering if someone has started compiling cap kit lists for jukeboxes.

Also, is there a good source for replacement speakers for these old Rock-olas? Both 12" speakers are torn.

Thanks.

J.
